The table has been fairly loose but there were 2-3 solid players at the table. I am in mid position.

I get dealt QQ

UTG limps for $5
UTG+1 calls
fold
fold
call
I raise to $30 (i have $1100)
fold
button calls (solid player - has $2000 in front of him and has been playing for 8 hours. Buy in max is $300)
SB folds
BB calls
UTG calls
UTG +1 folds

pot is now $127

Flop comes J - 7 - 3 rainbow

it checks to me and I bet $75

button calls, everyone else folds

pot is now $277

next card is a 5 - two clubs on the board as well

I bet $200 and here is the conversation with the button

Button:"That was the worst bluff bet I have ever seen"
Me:"ok"

Button:"do you call if i shove"?
Me:"We'll have to see"

My question is this, if he shoves in that spot, can you call?

Well first off, i wouldnt talk if you wanna get value out this, i dont see how you can fold this at all, i mean, u raise preflop, all calls on preflop, then you hit a low board, you bet, he calls, then turn is another under, so u bet 200, and he said he should shove my guess is he holding AJ or KJ of clubs, if the J wasnt club, so u pretty much still favor by not alot, depending on the river is really how the hand should be play, if he all ins on turn, then yeah gotta call cause pretty much your 55/45 favor, but u have the instinct that he is on a flush draw on turn, then u gotta fold the river if it clubs, cause knowing when your beat makes this game soo much easier.

If he is a solid player with 400bb starting the hand, what is he going to be pushing with?

I doubt, if he pushes, he has less than 2 pair, probably a set.

Are you really going to play for ~$800 more with just one pair?

I cant see calling a push.

less then two pairs the flop is j73? what would he have called preflop with two have two pair, you can obv say he got a set, cause its not hard to say it, cant be KK or AA obv reraise preflop, my guess is taht he got Aj of clubs or kj of clubs, which would lead him to say "should i all in" and "would you call" cause he got outs and wants to take down the pot right there.

So you are saying someone the OP said was a solid player is going to risk ~$800 which is 160bb on only one pair?

I could see possibly stacking off here with 100bb ($500), but the OP started with over 200bb, and the villain started with 400bb.

I take the question "if I push will you call?" to mean "can I get all your money if I push"?

hands like this are where I lose my money.

Can't lay down the big pair ....... I'd call and he would turn over a set of 7's.

i think your playing this a bit too safe, if u ask me, id call if he push, just cause he the 400bb or w.e and spoke a few word, doesnt mean anything, he doesnt even got a wide range on you if anything, 6 handed, you get qs, got the board for the best out of it, dont waste your money, if u think your ahead and someone goes "if i shove you call", and then think about it, common sense hes weak.

Sounds like he's put you on a strong hand, and he has a set. He's baiting you into making a call, or testing the waters to see if I can overbet the pot and get paid off.

If he shoves that flop, I'm folding for sure here.

If a solid player wants to put 200BBs into the pot I am usually folding one pair.

thanks for the comments guys. Fortunately I didnt need to worry about the decision because he folded his hand and showed me a Jack.

I was worried about a shove but didnt let him know it. I did not want to see 6 hours of work go down the drain if he did have a set.

I saw the same play on high stakes poker and Davd Benyamine did that play to Ivey. Ivey had KK and David had an under pair. Put Phil on high pair, said so, and shove all of his 500k into the pot. Ivey had to fold his Kings.

A correction on the above post. It was high stakes poker season three Phil Ivey vs Brad Booth - check it out on you tube.

YouTube - Phil Ivey vs Brad Booth on High Stakes Poker Season 3

Um, Booth didn't have top pair in the hand you're referring to, he had rags and had flopped a gutshot straight draw. It was a stone cold bluff, but I think you're right in saying that Booth had correctly put Ivey on a big pair and felt he could get him to fold if he made a strong move. Ivey had also bought in short to that game while Booth had bought in for $1 million, so he had Ivey covered by a lot. I kind of go back and forth about this hand -- sometimes I think it was a great high-stakes cash game move because of the "advertising value," other times I think it was ridiculous because it was such a ridiculous overbet to win a relatively small pot.
