I don't think it's a matter of being "unlucky" per se. In the grand scheme of things I think you both played the hand fine. He put you on a steal(ish) looking move, called a board of all unders on the flop, and got all his money in with the 2nd nuts. You started on a steal, flopped top pair, turned your gutshot, and appropriately lost all your chips to a higher straight.

You're not folding a straight there to an unknown villian that could easily have been set mining or BB specialing. You're going to discount the potential flush as well based on the way the hand played.

What JD said might very well be true but I'm still very cautious when stacking on a board like that. Basically There's a 4-card str8 out there, and you got the lowish end of that.

I think his min-raise on the turn shows he has you but by then you were pot committed.. One of the problems of shortstacking :)

Forget my flush comment above altogether. The flush filled in on the river after all the money went in on the turn, so mentioning the flush was a mistake. We're not worried about the flush when the money goes in.

Having said that, the only hands we should truly have to worry about here are 87, 77, and 76. There is no other hand with a 7 in it that played this way to the turn unless the guy is a complete and utter moron imo (but we don't have any read per OP, so avg credit is due to him, not mentally challenged status). I still think we see over pairs and sets here as well as a FD semi-bluff combined with some piece of that board (plus tie pots) a lot of the time here. If I call it any pair plus our specific scare hands (including the offsuit versions that shouldn't be here either), we are the favorite.

4,970,846 games 24.484 secs 203,024 games/sec
Board: 6h 3d 5c 4c

equity win tie pots won pots tied
Hand 0: 55.854% 49.06% 06.80% 2438620 337778.50 { 6s2s }
Hand 1: 44.146% 37.35% 06.80% 1856669 337778.50 { 22+, 87s, 76s, 87o, 76o }

And, as you pointed out, we have $3.80 left. We're ahead so often here that calling off our last $3.80 is automatic. Then we smack our foreheads, reload, and move on. :)

i don't see the point of potting the turn really. you stand to fold out basically every hand you beat and get action from the hands that beat you. that's generally the problem with playing the bottom end of a straight fast on a 4-straight board. checking the turn behind is the standard play here. it'll be much easier to get paid off by two pair and stuff on a river value bet after the turn checks through
