I don't think "Should I have called?" is the real issue.
But to answer it, no, you shouldn't have called the over bet on the river. You should have taken down the pot on the turn by betting a normal amount.

You opened to 5bb. (That is substantial. If the standard bet is $.06 or $.07 then, barring other data, I'll usually put you on a hand like J/J.)
You bet 73% of the pot on the flop.
You bet only 25% of the pot on the turn.
You bet only 10% of the pot on the river.

See a pattern? You're betting less than half of your previous bet (as a percentage of the pot) on each street. How do you think someone will interpret that pattern? And he doesn't even have to be paying attention to pot size, as betting $.24, then $.20, then $.12 screams "take my money because I am weak/scared."

You got especially tight on your river bet. He simply used the information you gave him and used it against you on the river.

There isn't anything wrong with opening to 5bb. In NL2 you'll probably get like 5 callers with a raise to 6c. Flop bet is fine, turn bet is not. Make a proper bet of at least 50c. If he raises turn, then you'll probably have to call then c/c or c/f river depending on your reads. If you think a flush is a large part of his range then you might even want to c/c the turn for pot control.

Anyways, what do you expect when you make a pathetic bet on the turn then the ultra pathetic bet on the river? Honestly, why did you even bet river? What were you trying to do? And the fold is a suprising move, seeing as you underrepresented the strength of your hand so much with your line that you do actually beat alot here.

Originally thought that after the turn there were 4 spades on the board so had to edit.

cheers guys...........yes, it was scared betting on my behalf, as soon as I saw the 3rd spade on the turn, I'm thinking, 'oh-oh here we go, he's caught the flush' so I scaled my betting down to see if he reraises me. He didnt, so Im thinking ok, maybe he needs another spade. So on the river, I'm betting to see what he does, as soon as he reraises me I think 'OK, he HAS got the flush' lets get out of here.
It was a great bluff by him(or maybe just a standard bluff anyone would have done against my play?), and I did say that to him afterwards.
As for my 5 x bb PF, Ive noticed Im getting to many callers if I do my standard mtt/sng PF raise of 3-4 bb, so I wanted to isolate someone

this advice has forced me to look at how much I'm betting as a percentage of the pot every time, guess I should be doing it all the time anyway, but sometimes I forget.
Thanks SP

ya, turn bet killed you. good posts regarding turn bet. if you going to fire....fire...your turn bet was like a change up pitch....except those don't work in poker if you want someone gone.

easy fold on the river though
