Just came back from Vegas and played $1/2 NL at the Flamingo.

Would you have played this hand differently?
Would you have played this hand at all? In reevaluting the pot odds...it may not have been a wise play...

I get dealt J♣8♣ on the SB, 4 player's limp in so I throw in the extra buck.

BB raises to $15, they all fold to me. Currently there is $25 in the pot.

The BB has been known to raise when a lot of player's have limped in and he is one of the last to speak. So I figured there was a possibility he was just trying to steal the pot. I decided, heads up, I'd see if there was opportunity here to play the "poker mind game"....

So I call. Now there is $38 in the pot.

Flop comes:
7♣9♣3♥

I have a flush draw heads up and a potential additional win at the $200 poker room high hand pot if I get my jack high gut shot straight flush draw.

I decide to lead out betting...when I am in a hand I seldom check when first to act...unless I absolutely didn't hit and the pot's not worth a steal.

So I bet $15 ... and in rethinking this, I think I would have bet $20 (a little over 1/2 the pot)...that seems like a more substantial bet...$15 heads up seems like a feeler bet to me. So now there is $53 in the pot

He reraises me to $35....making the pot $88 and another $20 from me....this was a borderline call for me....I tend at this stage to fold more often than call, and it was probably the potential of winning that high hand pot..although slim...so I call his additional $20 reraise and

now there is $108 in the pot.

Turn comes:
5♥

I check. I'm still on a flush draw and I don't want him to reraise me so I wait for him to bet.

He bets another $35....Now there is $143 in the pot.

I call.

River comes:
J♦

I did not hit my flush, or my gut shot straight or gut shot straight flush, I hit high pair on the board, maybe he had a higher pocket pair all this time...but with a flush draw and straight draw on the board...I would think he would have bet more to scare me off my draws so I didn't put him on pocket QQs KKs or AAs.

I knew if I checked it would be a total sign of weakness and he'd bet out for sure...and maybe more than I would be willing to call and then I'd have to fold and never know if he bet based on my weak actions. But if I bet and he wasn't sure about his hand, he'd finally either fold or just call. If he really had something, then he'd come over the top and then the reasonable thing for me to do would be to fold.

...I wanted him to think...hmmm she called my raise preflop, bet out first, called my reraise on the flop, checked and flat called my 1/3 pot bet on the turn, what does she have?? So I figured I would have to bet out and bet out bigger than his previous bets.

So I bet $50 and this time he didn't raise, and just called.

He flips over pocket 10s and I win a $243 pot with High pair Jack.

He was ticked off to no end and said, "you called my $35 bets with J,8???"

Comments please.

Cheers,
Vegas Cat

^^This.

I bin this preflop to be honest because you have a very marginal hand that you'll be playing OOP, unless you feel you have a very good handle on this guy and know that you can outplay him on later streets.

well considering your read i think the preflop action was good. Everything after the flop was justified considering u had a flush and straight draw. I might have stopped after the turn but with your read no. he can not be mad you have Alot of outs. Good hand. (wouldnt it have been nice for the 10 of clubs on the river Sexi)

For the way this hand went he has nothing to complain about after the flop, your odds were good every time. If anything he can say about your PF play, calling $15 with J8s OOP. I'm with Schatz I'd fold this PF, but once played it looks fine to me, he failed to give you incorrect odds all the way with an overpair, probably because he tried to suck you in which is fine but you can't complain if you end up getting outdrawn.

He actually should consider himself lucky, cause there is always worse, if the river happens to be a T you would end up getting his whole stack for sure with him having a set and you making your straight.

I dont get how calling the 20$ was a borderline call. I think it was the easiest call of the hand!

Yes

Would you have played this hand at all? In reevaluting the pot odds...it may not have been a wise play...

9:1, easy limp.

If you think that you can outplay him postflop, then I don't mind it so much since he's shown a tendency to try and steal family pots and most probably doesn't have that strong of a hand. It does worry me that he's raising from the blinds though (ie he'll be OOP vs anyone but the SB the rest of the hand).

This is where I fold.

Flop comes:
7♣9♣3♥
Monster draw; I'm ready to get really aggressive with this. 99/77/33 all fit your line so far, and we have some good fold equity if your opponent is holding a higher pair. We of course have tons of outs (12 if I counted right) if we end up getting looked up.

I have a flush draw heads up and a potential additional win at the $200 poker room high hand pot if I get my jack high gut shot straight flush draw.

lol...I hope this didn't influence your action...

I decide to lead out betting...when I am in a hand I seldom check when first to act...unless I absolutely didn't hit and the pot's not worth a steal.

There's nothing wrong with checking. If we're planning on seeing a cheap turn, then check-calling is probably the best way to go. If we're trying to get aggressive (the way I would play it), then we can lead-push to a raise.

So I bet $15 ... and in rethinking this, I think I would have bet $20 (a little over 1/2 the pot)...that seems like a more substantial bet...$15 heads up seems like a feeler bet to me. So now there is $53 in the pot

$15 was fine methinks.

He reraises me to $35....making the pot $88 and another $20 from me....this was a borderline call for me....I tend at this stage to fold more often than call, and it was probably the potential of winning that high hand pot..although slim...so I call his additional $20 reraise and

Like I said, if I'm leading, it's because I want to come over the top of him and either make him fold his overcards, or possibly an overpair.

If we're considering calling or folding only, then this is not borderline at all. We're sitting on a 2.92:1 draw to the turn, 1.61:1 if we're counting our overcard (which isn't clean), and we're getting ~4.5:1 pot odds. Even considering folding here is really really bad.

now there is $108 in the pot.

Turn comes:
5♥

I check. I'm still on a flush draw and I don't want him to reraise me so I wait for him to bet.

Then why did we bet the flop? If we're not going to try and get our whole stack in and instead ch-c down, then don't lead!

He bets another $35....Now there is $143 in the pot.

I call.

Again getting great pot odds. Easy call.

Fair enough. Your pair could very well be good.

Exactly - pretty much the definition of a block bet.

...I wanted him to think...hmmm she called my raise preflop, bet out first, called my reraise on the flop, checked and flat called my 1/3 pot bet on the turn, what does she have?? So I figured I would have to bet out and bet out bigger than his previous bets.

He flips over pocket 10s and I win a $243 pot with High pair Jack.

He was ticked off to no end and said, "you called my $35 bets with J,8???"

meh, ignore him. You were given incredible odds (even just for the flush draw) all the way down, save preflop.

Comments please.

I play a much more aggressive game in rings, and would have tried to get as much money in on the flop as possible, but otherwise I think you played it fine.
