Villain seems a reasonable player. Haven't seen him for many hands, but I've only seen him re-raise once when he had AA.

Anyway, what do you do here? Call the re-raise and hope to hit a set? 3-bet it to clarify where you stand? Push?

Repop to $15 and be pretty certain my hand is good if I'm just called. If he comes back over the top then I probably think, use up half my time bank, and ultimately decide that the best course of action is throwing my monitor out of the window.

i would probably call and check-raise any undercard flop. re-popping is good too, but if he comes back over the top you probably have to fold

a 4-bet to $15 wont feel good if you're already suspicous, but it's probably the best way to go to find out more information about your opponents hand. If he moves all-in, you can be sure your hand is beat. If he just calls, proceed with caution on the flop onwards.

Here's what happened - I re-raised to $12 total, he pushed and I folded:

PRE-FLOP
Bombjack_x bets $2, Husky16 folds, sanghiam bets $5, glover24 folds, TAMKA folds, Bombjack_x bets $10, sanghiam bets $84.05 and is all-in, Bombjack_x folds.

He didn't show, although he said he had AA.

I think that was the absolute perfect way to play it. The push means you can be practically certain that he had AA or KK, and you re-raised the best amount to save a few bucks and still get the same information you'd have gotten if you raised more.

Many people would have called the first raise trying to get a set, but I just think that's too dangerous of a move. All undercards are going to flop a helllll of a lot more often than you're going to make your set, and then you probably have to go broke because you didn't get enough information pre-flop to judge if he has TT/JJ/AKs or KK/AA. I prefer your method.

I changed his name to Villain, as I do with most opponents, but forgot to change it in the last post. Just because it's not ethical to post about particular opponents.

Interestingly I had another QQ hand later on in the session. Different Villain. Do you do fold this time?

Seat 6: Bombjack_x [ :qd4:,:qh4: ] ($90.20 in chips)
Seat 7: Villain ($98.15 in chips)
Seat 9: charlieyboy3 ($24.25 in chips)
ANTES/BLINDS
charlieyboy3 posts blind ($0.25), Bombjack_x posts blind ($0.50).

PRE-FLOP
Villain bets $2, charlieyboy3 calls $1.75, Bombjack_x bets $8, Villain bets $96.15 and is all-in, charlieyboy3 folds, Bombjack_x...

Slightly off topic, but you do seem to pick them Bombjack...! Any reads? Given my last 100 hands worth of luck, I tilt and call against AKd and watch the flop bring one diamond, the turn another, and the river a third. Not much faith in the poker gods at the moment...... HH's to prove it a request!

not worth it because the only hand you are drastically ahead of is JJ that i can see him doing this with. I think AQ on most opponents would hit the muck, and i know I would let AK go for sure.

Yep I suppose it's another "read-dependent" question. Do I believe he has Aces or Kings? He'd only been at the table about 25 hands and had been quite active... so, er, basically not much of a read. It would be a lot more straightforward at a 10-seater, but 3-handed...

I think its a call. More often than not in short-hand games, I see people try to take the pot quickly with small pairs, figuring that the odds are strongly in their favor that no-one has an overpair. Given the relatively low bets (compared to his all-in), this ones smells really funny. Given that you've got the #3 best hand, the odds are even less likely that he has AA or KK.
I love QQ, and so I actually keep track of my own stats on this one hand. Out of 31 times someone has put me in position to call all-in preflop, I've only folded twice (to very tight players only), and called the other 29. I've had the best pre-flop hand 27 times, and won 22 times (either an A comes out, or a lower pairs gets lucky). so I've won roughly 2/3 of those all-ins.
If this were the wsop or something I'm sure I would only win half that many times, but the fact is that short of the "big games," there are far too many players who will go all-in on comparatively weak hands.

Now if I could just learn to fold the KK...

Yep, the push here rather than a smaller re-raise, after just one re-raise rather than two was a bit suspicious. Add in the fact that it was 3-handed, I had to call. Here's what happened:

Seat 6: Bombjack_x [ QD,QH ] ($90.20 in chips)
Seat 7: Villain ($98.15 in chips)
Seat 9: charlieyboy3 ($24.25 in chips)
ANTES/BLINDS
charlieyboy3 posts blind ($0.25), Bombjack_x posts blind ($0.50).

PRE-FLOP
Villain bets $2, charlieyboy3 calls $1.75, Bombjack_x bets $8, Villain bets $96.15 and is all-in, charlieyboy3 folds, Bombjack_x calls $81.70 and is all-in.

FLOP [board cards QC,2H,5C ]

TURN [board cards QC,2H,5C,KD ]

RIVER [board cards QC,2H,5C,KD,4H ]

SHOWDOWN
Villain shows [ 10D,10C ]
Bombjack_x shows [ QD,QH ]
Bombjack_x wins $181.90, Villain wins $7.95.

he knew your hand...

hehe, this is one of those ones where you sit back and you can now see exactly what the Villain was thinking:
"okay, I have a good pair, the other guy raised 4x my bet, so he probably has an AK or AQ. I'm good for the race, and the odds are slightly in my favor even if he calls. But he can't call an all-in for his entire stack with two overcards, so If I push him he'll fold."
(I know, because I made this exact mistake a couple of times back when I was getting started. It took more money than I like to admit to learn not to fall in love with my pre-flop hands).

very bad read by the Villain, but it would be very hard for the rest of us to make money unless there were a lot of donk players out there, right?
