I probably would have folded. Pocket 8's are not worth going all in.:icon_salu

what position were u in, what was your stack alot of things go into this. If in a good position or short stacked a raise is appropriate. if not if try to get in as cheaply as possible.

Wouldn't raise or go all-in with pp 8's unless the flop showed another one or two 8's!

Nope, pocket 8s are just another pair of low cards. Too many other pockets and board cards can beat you so you can be sure you are out or gonna lose tons more often than not if you call all in with those. Also, like someone said, it really depends on alot of circumstances like your chips stack, position and such. I made an all in too last night on pocket 8s but that was because I had 100 chips left and the blinds were 25/50 and half the table in front of me folded.

My question is, what prompted the all in re-raise? Did he think he had caught a fly in his trap? Was he short stacked? What made him so sure he wasn't up against a made hand? Those are the kind of players which make it profitable to call all in bets in freerolls and low limit games and tournaments with any pocket pair. It's also why we freerollers get spanked when we make the same call against real tallent.

Out of interest i looked up my stats on pocket eights, got them 14 times out of 1758 hands and only one once. Thats what you call NEGATIVE expetation, limp in or FOLD

Wow! That's a pretty bad record for pocket 8's. I think you may have a serious leak there pal. How'd you do with 7's?

Oops! For those of you who didn't pick up on my trademark sarcasm, that's me above. It didn't occur to me that I would have to log my wife out before posting. BTW, 1758 is a pretty good sized selection of hands, and it seems as though you saw 8's about twice as often as you should have. How did you keep track?

Going all in with pocket 8's when re raised, unless you're super short stacked (in which case you maybe should have pushed all in to start with) isn't a good idea. Sure you're a favorite to A-K, but you don't know that's what he has and you also don't want to risk your whole stack on a coin-flip.

I would have folded them out. 8's are a vulnerable starting hand and only worth pursuing if the board comes rags or you hit the set.

That's a pretty tight playing philosophy. Just curious, at what point do you start calling with paired starting hands.

I really don't like playing paired starting hands, or rather low pairs. Depending on position and the type of game, I would call with 10's upward. I find the problem that you are drawing to only two outs to really improve and any overcard is a scarecard.

How do you plays pairs?

Got the stats from Poker tracker, a bit sad i know but thats what i try to use it for to stop myself playing marginal hands when i should'nt, a lot of them stats are from full ring games when I limped in an didnt hit. By the way ive done much much better with 7's guess you have to have a bit of luck now and again lol

well if you have a big stck you can easily raise 2 or 3 x the BB. But if your shortstacked then call or check is good. Make sure the bet isnt to expensive tho

That's interesting. I'm going to have to look into that. Keep the tracker on and try raising with your medium pairs for a week. See if it makes a difference. I get decent results by isolating, or elliminating all together, my opposition with a big slick type raise. Out of position, fire away with a 1/2 to 3/4 pot bet if no scare cards show up on the flop. In position see how your opponent bets after the flop and act accordingly.
