Not quite. If you push preflop, you either a) take the blinds, giving you another 1,000 or so chips without resistance, or b) you get called, win, and double up, or c) you get called, and lose.
The problem if you just call preflop you can't fold afterwards anyway, or else you don't have the chips remaining for the other players to take you seriously when you do try to steal the blinds. Basically, you don't have enough chips left to have any options, so if you're going to play, push. Especially with a middle pocket pair.
I'm pushing preflop here, with 22, 33, any pair, probably any Ace, 2 face cards. I think most people are, is what they're trying to tell ya, so 77 is in the upper range of what I'm hoping for.
