Anyone willing (and able) to go through one of my 1st PL Omaha Hi sessions (~100 hands at .05/.10)? I'm just learning Omaha so I'm trying to get a handle on my mistakes and identify opportunities I might be missing.

If you would be willing to help me out, just send me a PM or post here and I'll get you the HH file when I crawl into work tomorrow.

Thanks.

If you can answer yes to the following question on any given hand, it was a poorly played hand:

Did you put money in without a realistic chance to hit a nut hand based on the board?

Eh, while I think this is pretty good advice for a beginner, but Omaha is more than just nut camping/drawing to the nuts. And its more complex than that in my experience. Not saying I'm good, or that nut camping isn't a good way to earn $ at low limits. But I do know several fairly good omaha players, and its much more than just hanging out and making the nuts.

Ok maybe this will work better if I just post a few hands I have questions about (I'll post them one at a time and wait for feedback before posting the next).

Should we even think about calling here? This is my 3rd hand at the table and I know nothing about the preflop raiser. I know we're about 21% to hit a set on the flop but if it's the 6 it's likely to only be bottom set. So what's your play?

I'm not sure why you didn't raise your hand to begin with. You have a very strong chance of making a set with two pairs, and its usually worth building the pot with a small raise. One of your kings is suited as well, which can be a flush maker, especially in loose low limit games.

This is definitely worth a call, since this is rarely a hand other than aces, and you're getting good implied odds (15:1) on your call. Even better since two of the other limpers also came along for the ride. Only annoying thing is that we don't have position on the aces. Additionally, since he is likely to have aces, if you make a set of 6's, we can feel better about them since we've better defined his range.

Definitely call. Odds are you've got the best hand so far, and the odds are so good now that the other players have also called.

I've found, especially in PLOH, that raising preflop won't help you narrow the field, so I wouldn't recommend raising. All it does is build the pot, and given that no PF hand is seriously dominant in this game, I pretty much always flat-call to the flop if I have a good starting hand.

the flop is even more important in Omaha than Holdem, so thats where all the real decisions have to be made. You want to put yourself in this position: flopped a monster (not necessarily the nuts, though) made hand, one card draw to the nuts, or fold. a KK66 with 1 suited is a good shot at flopping a monster. However, unless you flop a set, you pretty much have to fold.

This is also my experience.

My preflop raising range at PLO is pretty narrow, because of this problem, and I don`t think this hand merits that.

However, you certainly have a good enough hand to call, and you have position. Take the flop, but don`t get wedded to this one. It`s not a monster.

Like I said it was only my 3rd hand so I didn't know how the table would respond to a raise (especially from the button). I didn't think this hand was that strong preflop, so I just limped. It looks like from the responses here I should have at least called (I folded because I figured it was really a 2 out hand) but had I called what would you have done with the rest of the hand???

MrsPauls: folds
--- DEALING FLOP [6s,Ad,9h]
kamikaze13oi: checks
fly73: bets $2.60
cerealman: folds
kamikaze13oi: folds
MrsPauls (if he wasn't such a wuss and were still in the hand): ????

If I were still in the hand, I think I have to fold bottom set here right???

That's really strange. The PFR pounded the field with a hand that wasn't aces. But yeah, even though you have bottom set, with an ace on a super dry board, I wouldn't be too excited about stacking off. If that flop was Q,6,9, and the opening raiser bet, I'd be more inclined to play it.

In omaha, raising is only to build the pot. And I'd raise with your drawing hands and hands that are highly likely to make a set+, so you can get your stack in on the flop easier. So I'd raise double pairs (QQ77, 77TT, ect.), monster wrap hands that can flop 20 outers, and obviously DS aces & DS kings.

I thought it odd too until I saw some of the hands the preflop raiser was playing as the game went on. I think he ended up giving almost 2 buy-ins away. Nice guy.

I don't mind raising preflop but with a hand like this I would want to know that I might thin the crowd a little with a raise.

Speaking of our raiser giving away $$. This hand occurred probably 10 hands after the last one posted and I haven't been very active at the table thus far.

So is this a hand worth a preflop raise OOP?? Should we value bet / bet to chase away the non-nut flush on the river? If we check and he bets pot do we just fold and curse the gods???

Since you'll be OOP, and your flush isn't too strong, I'd lean more towards not raising. You aren't going to hit enough flops to get your stack in with on a regular basis to make that raise profitable. If that was the Q, J, or T of diamonds, then it'd certainly be worth a small pot building raise.

And why do you want to thin the crowd? Since Omaha's a drawing game, and you're playing a lot less non-nut hands, having multi-way pots doesn't hurt you as much, especially since you're going to be c-betting a LOT less than hold'em.

Also, with that many players in the pot, I'd be looking to check raise with top set and the 2nd nut flush draw. You're first to act, and you'd like to get your stack in before any more cards come out, since things like that can happen on the river, leaving you with a tough decision.

I think this is a pretty standard check/call on the river. Betting accomplishes very little, and it is a backdoor flush that completed, so its a lot harder to put your opponent on 2 hearts. So I'd be inclined to call a bet on the river, read dependent.

Ok. I really wasn't sure what to do if he bet but:

MrsPauls: checks
kamikaze13oi: checks
MrsPauls: shows [Kd Ks 7s 9h]
kamikaze13oi: mucks
Hand 1187414851:
MrsPauls: wins main pot($7.10)

Bodog so know way to see his mucked cards but with this guy it could have been anything.

I'll post a few more hands later.
