Looking at how widely popular poker has become....

Is it safe to assume that the game we play may also be changing?

You see a fair share of flushes in the casino or at live home games but can we all agree there are a shitload of em online?

Maybe it's the online player "thinking" the software gives him better odds at catching his flush because he sees so many more hands online than live

or is this notion of online odds being different from live game odds for real?

Actually is the same, its the same deck of 52 cards, but since online you see so many hands and at a faster rate, it might seem like online odds are different but in reality they arent . Another thing is , online people chase more as they are not embarrased to make a stupid retarted play because no one can see them ^_^

I agree with this, I think you don't care as much if you Donk a hand as long as no one can stare at you the rest of the game. I think the odds are the same but the rate of hands makes it seem different.

thanks Sexy

I get what you're saying and don't get me wrong, I truly believe that the odds are the same

I just feel looking back, and maybe this is the embarassment factor, I have made some hands with cards I know I shouldnt have made............. after large raises..............
and seeing I have a gut shot str8 draw or flush and call that big bet on the turn anyways........

and make my hand and bust some one.....

I know (that's poker)

but in live games I just wouldn't "feel" I have a "REAL CHANCE" to hit that flush like I "feel" I do online

and maybe it is because we see so many hands online

maybe the embarassment factor too...

maybe the real reason is all of that stuff combined.

So knowing this in advance....

when you have 66 in the pocket and the flop

10h 6h 5d

you should be (about) a 70%-75% fav vs. say Ah 8h

but knowing you are playing online and that player is more likely to put all his chips at risk for the Ace high flush

Does this change your odds???

well the random card generators they say they use should mean that every deal should be completely random in an online game (of course we could get into the whole issue of how some of the sites use 'tweaked' software to create more action flops and thus more rake, but we won't even go there)
In live games, the deals should be random aswell, but of course there is the factor of non-perfect shuffles that leave some cards closer to others, and therefor deals are not completely random.
Basically, omitting some tiny %ages, the deals should be completely the same in online and brick and mortar games.

EDIT: i see only now that you are talking about odds of hands (i should read the posts more thoroughly :p)
The odds are exactly the same.
As SexyAceJoker said, many people chase hands more, and therefore you see made hands more (flushes, straights, etc) which you might not see as often in live games.
Also the fact that you play something like 10X faster online brings the long-term to short-term, and you see alot more hands at the showdown due to this. This does not mean that the % is higher, just the # of them in a set amount of time which makes it seem so.

I think I see alot more chasing online. You get more chasers therefore you see more flushes and straights made. I see donkeys pay to see cards with over pot size bets to try and hit their flushes.

You see people bomb all-in with a straight/flush draw and don't hit online. They can be gone from the table within seconds of the finish of the hand and starting the next game. There is no long walk or oops factor when sitting at the computer. You don't have to wait for a side game or everyone to finish to start another game. Online there is always the next game just a click away so who cares if you don't hit it.

Its interesting how people chase online, especially in NL hold em , where Flush chasing and straight chasing is almost dead, if your opponent is strong his going to be enough to warrant a incorrect call and if you make your hand, you wont get paid by a strong opponent , thus implied odds go down . Many players use as an explanation for bad play , the implied odds, but in the highest level this just doesnt work, its so mechanical its not even funny ^_^

I have seen 4 of a kind so many times on line that I could honestly say it's been more than 50 times in the last 2 months. On comparison, I have only seen 4 of a kind at our home games once or twice in the last 7 or 8 months.
Flushes and straight seem to be about right online vs. home games.
