I was playing in ring game the other day and flopped the absolute nutswith an 89 and the flop was 567 with 2 clubs.Great spot so I lead out since I am sb. I get one caller and one reraise. Now I am salivating!! Or am I?He has 9c 10c!!This is the first time that I have flopped the nuts and actually been the dog to win!! Needless to say I wouldn't be writing this if he didn't catch. An 8 came on turn giving him a higher straight!Oh well ,at least it wasn't a bad beat!!!

You werent the dog.

He had 9 flush outs and 3 (in this case 2) eights, giving him 11 outs, 44% to win.

You were a 56% favourite.

it is impossible to flop the nuts and still be a dog, its just now how it works, only way you can have the best hand and not be ahead is if you just have a pair and they have an open ended str8 flush draw with over cards, or maybe just the open ended str8 flush draw

he sucked out on you, it was a bad beat, you should be angry

Sympathies. :(

It`s not as unusual as you might think, though. Here is a very similar example that happened to me:

CCchallenge17

A few months ago, we had a little fun contest here. The idea was to get a screenshot of each of a series of specified unusual table situations. One of them was "Flop the Nuts and still lose the Showdown". Quite a lot of us were able to get screenshots like this in a relatively short time.

not true if the other guy had 8,9 of clubs then the poster would be behind with the nuts!

I read something about a 9 way pot where hero flops top set but everyone else has all the other possible pocket pairs/straight/flush combinations so the nuts is actually drawing dead to quads.

Note that this was in a theoretical discussion.

How is top set drawing dead to quads

vanquish top set isnt drawing dead there, and certainly not to quads.

You still have the case 9, so youre not drawing dead to anything.

Plus if 2 or 8 or 10 comes on turn to give the straight, then if another 2 or 8 comes or non spade ten comes on river, you get a full house.

top set is a big dog here but not to quads.

I thought the nuts was when you have the other person drawing dead. When there are no outs that will help. So how can you flop the nuts when people have outs...

Nuts = best hand given the current board.

You misunderstood what I said (or I said it in a confusing way). I meant that top set has to improve to quads (dead to the case 9) in order to win this hand. However, you are right about running deuces or tens, so I guess it's drawing dead to the case 9 and running deuces and tens.

I thought the nuts was when you have the other person drawing dead.

You have the nuts when you have the best possible hand available with that board. So for example, in the screenshot I posted up above, when the flop fell I had a King-high straight. There were no two pocket cards that any other player could have had that would have beaten me at that point.

When the board changes (as another community card is dealt) that can change and, as in the example, my hand may not be unbeatable any longer.

also running eights, threes, and fives (only if P2 or P9 has the 5 of spades)
