Although it may have been a bad call, in this particular hand the OP was getting implied odds
. You can't assume a stack when you hit your flush, but in this case the implied odds were there. Miss the flush, just lose the call. Hit the flush, win the pot and the stack.

When people bust they can buy back in. So if there are 9 people sitting on $10, and one guy busts another $10 comes onto the table. For example whenever I get below the max buy-in, even if it's just the blinds hit me, I immediately re-buy up the max. If everyone does that there's more money on the table and it's quite explainable why the majority would have over the max buy-in.
