Against a tricky player, Usually enters a pot with a raise, but I hadn't seen him re raise. That is about all I know, other than if he raises pre flop, he is betting a pot sized bet, come what may

I would expect a bigger pair or possibly AKs. The BEST you could do with these is a coin flip. I would fold.

If he has changed from his usual pattern you would have to wonder why now.
1. What did he do last time someone raised?
2. When entering pots with a raise did he always have a hand?
3. How quick was the raise?
4. How often does he go to the flop?

On first instinct i say fold - he has more than doubled you bet to 13BBs at the best of times is JJ really worth that?
If you have the slightest idea hes bluffing 'maybe' call to see the flop and you might get lucky, but to be honest i cant see beyond a fold here.

AA,KK,QQ are beating you AK,AQ, and he hits the flop - your beat.

Well the way I thought about it.

There was always a chance it was a complete bluff, but that is highly unlikely as he was in early position, but still had postion on me of course. Anyone sitting behind him could have put him in trouble.

AA KK QQ where a huge possibility i thought, AK was the only other hand I could see him doing it with. 10 10 was unlikely. AQ unlikely but I Would be in much the same spot as AK anyway.

I actually timed out thinking about it, but I was going to fold anyway.

I was getting 2-1 to call, not enough I think, but with implied odds if i hit the Jack it probably was. I am no expert on this, but the way I thought about it, my implied odds were good, but my reverse implied odds were awful. If I hit a J and he had AA and hit an ace, I was going to lose my whole stack

Bit new to this Cash game malarky, am still getting to grips with it. In a tournamant other factors help make the decisions slightly easier, and I think I just generally understand sng concepts better than ring games

Given the amounts involved (around $14 in the pot and he'll have $42 remaining on the flop), I don't see how he's going to get away from an overpair versus your set, either. Given the rarity of both flopping sets, I think your implied odds far eclipse your losses in the worst case.

But when all is said and done, I don't think I'd call here. I'd do it sometimes if I had position and then play it very tentatively from then on, because the odds are decent and I could stack him if I hit a jack.

This happens so rarely that it's not even worth noting.
When you flop a set, you assume it's not up against a bigger set (except in some v. rare cases) when you play it.

Yes that is how I usually play a set, not worry about another set, as I say I am used to playing sng, so I am still adjusting to making the correct plays. In SNG, you can never really fold a set with a lot of money in the pot, unless there is an obvious flush or straight, and even then it is debatable.

I am grinding my way through this cash game malarky, and enjoying it, it certainly makes you consider your decisions hard when it is all your own real money at stake.

I think I will be better when i have some more notes on players. Thanks for the replies.

A fold wasn't a bad decision then in the end ?

It really depends on your read on the player, and also what read you think he has on you.

If he seems to reraise often or seems pretty aggressive, he may be reraising light, in which case you may be ahead. If you've been raising often, he may be playing back at you thinking that you're loose with your raises. If either of you are new to the table, maybe folding is the best option, and wait for a better opportunity.

For me JJ is like AK; it plays better if I'm the last preflop raiser so flat calling seems the poorest option.
