You will hear in that the most common way to win is to play Tight and Agressive.
You have a very good overpair and give him odds
all the way through to stay in the hand.
the benefit of being aggressive when you have a good hand is
a) You can win the hand and protect outdraws.
b) you make rubbish players pay a high price for their mistakes when they call with inferier hands.
c) if you come up against big resistence you know that they have a good hand most the time. this is Information that you can use.
In short your pre-flop bet did nothing to give you the initiave. The flop bet gave you no information because you did not bet hard enough. You were then indecisive on the turn as a result and lost your "story" that you were telling him. ( eg - I told you had a good hand preflop, I am still telling you on the flop, do you still want to be in on the turn with yet another raise? )
Also note - you tell us nothing about the other player, does his play suggest that he will ever fold top Pair Top kicker? if no then this makes the play even more valid as he will keep on calling even if you do bet bigger and this is a long term winning play. If yes - you would know from betting bigger if he had better than TPTK and therefore was probably beating you.
Ultimately you got unlucky on the river when he hit one of 5 outs. You were 88% Favourite at this point and all you did was call his bet. In short you want to raise the pot big time here if you think you rae this far in front. How do you know - you find out information with your bets. You got no info from your bets.
My stats tell me I win most in cash games with 2pair or more. I do win some money with Top pair or overpair - but it is not so rewarding. Thats why you want to win these hands early on in a hand IMHO.
