Didn't have a read of Et3rnityx, had a feeling I was behind when they called my raise on the flop, but couldn't put them on a hand. Thought long & hard but in the end made a curiosity call. They said afterwards they were hoping someone had the 8.

Pretty horrible play throughout, should I have trusted my instincts and folded trips here?

I think you're being way too results oriented. Frankly, I don't see how you can get away from that hand. Chalk it up as unlucky.

TOUGH BREAK

I feel your pain - and no, I don't think you played it badly, although folding is always an option if you think you're beaten.
You flopped trips, and someone flopped a boat. It sucks, but it happens occasionally, so I wouldn't sweat it too much on that count. However, I don't think I would have called this one down to the river, mostly because of your kicker. While it is unlikely that the other 8 was out there, you have to consider that anyone raising to you when you bet on the paired board either has the other 8, or is holding a good PP. If they have the other 8, even on a "random" selection of the other card they hold, the chances are they have a better kicker than you.
Your flop raise was good. I don't like checking the turn, but it's not wrong to check it here - its more of a style/habit thing for me, as I never allow free cards, unless I'm already going to fold.

You should bet the river, though. after raising the flop and checking the turn, you're practically screaming "slow play," and I think your opponent pushed all in with a fair certainty that you'd call. I think a small bet (1/4-1/2 pot) would either win you the hand (if he was bluffing), or force him to raise all-in. The difference now is that he would be raising you to go all-in - making it much less likely he's bluffing. That would be the information I need to fold your hand.
Of course, having said that, If I had to call/fold in the situation you were in on the river - I would call, both from curiosity, and to show the rest of the table that I won't be pushed off good hands - even if they lose sometimes.

Yeah, I think you're stuck with this. You don't have a read on him, so I'd say him having two pair is just as likely. Granted his overbet on the river was weird, but I still think you're calling here.

You have to stop and think about what hands check-call a big flop raise like that.

There are no draws on board (unless you want to count a lowly gutshot which I really dont see someone chasing). tbh unless you've got a read on him as being a big calling station, he's either got to have an 8 (which most probably has a better kicker than yours) or is slowplaying a made FH.

Then again I dont' doubt I pay him off on the river either.

I hope you noted him as a slowplayer ;)

I think you can get away from this hand. Maybe with A8 you would be semi-forced into the call....but not with 87

Thanks guys, confirming what I thought. My instinct was thatI was beaten, I knew my kicker wasn't great, but I couldn't see trips with a high kicker playing it like that. The FH I didn't even see, had I thought about it I may have put him on it.

One good point was that it didn't put me on tilt or anything which I consider a sign my game's improving. Just going to file this one away as a situation to be aware of. I felt the river call was a bad one, but without being able to put my finger on why felt it was worth the investment to find out.

Thanks for the input folks.
