OK where exactly did I go wrong here? I was quick to say that this was just bad luck but I have found two possible mistakes on my part. 1) only limped in preflop. a raise might have pushed xandy.. out. (the way he was playing it might have provoked an all-in out of him also which if I called would have had the same result and if I folded he just bullied me out of my raise) OK mistake #2) should I have waited for the river to go all-in and then I would have seen the pair on the board. Should he have called my all in with trip 3's and a flush on the board. Given our relative chipstacks I think he was ok to call though. Obviously I wanted him to. What are the odds of the board pairing on the river if you have a set? That's 10 outs (3 for three of the cards and 1 for one of them (which would actually give you quads)) out of 46 unknown cards. 10/46=.21 or about 1 in 5. Quads would obviously be 1 in 46. Correct?
