My favorite part about late position semi bluffs is the opportunity they give me to get two cards for the price of one. The idea is to raise like any semibluff, but with the specific intention of driving out the person who speaks after you. Often, everyone will check to you on the turn, regardless of what falls. Then you get to decide what to do next. If you hit, go ahead and raise; if you didn't, take that free river and see if you have better luck there.
Not precisely the newest trick in the book, but for what it's worth, there it is.
Table is loose but not very aggressive pre-flop.
pokerstars No-Limit Hold'em, $0.10 BB (5 handed) converter
MP ($2.85)
Button ($4.15)
SB ($7.90)
BB ($22.70)
Hero ($6.55)
Preflop: Hero is UTG with J♣, Q♥.
Hero calls $0.10, MP calls $0.10, Button folds, SB completes, BB checks.
Flop: ($0.40) 3♣, 10♦, 9♣ (4 players)
SB checks, BB checks, Hero bets $0.1, MP folds, SB calls $0.10, BB calls $0.10.
In this situation, my raise isn't primarily to drive everyone out, but to at least drive the MP (only one left who speaks after me) out. Whatever the turn comes, chances are I will get checked to, and if I don't hit, I don't have to bet. I get, essentially, to see two cards for the price of one minimum bet.
Turn: ($0.70) 3♠ (3 players)
Nope, no straight for me, I check again. Free river card. Let's hope I hit.
SB checks, BB checks, Hero checks.
(It doesn't really matter whether I hit or not, now does it?)
