Are you a donk?
I guarantee that at any given time, whatever you play, there is never a shortage of
"experts", whose chips you just added to your own, who will call you a
"donk" or
"donkey" - I guarantee it.
I also guarantee that there is not an honest poker player who has not made a less than perfect play. Sometimes the "wrong" play at the right time is what is needed.
I also guarantee that
every last one of these players play more than
AA, KK AK, QQ on the button. Sometimes this is not required to win -
skill comes in deciding what it takes to win and executing.Show me a player who always makes the correct decision I'll show you one deluded individual.
I also guarantee that there are many more reasons that hand strength that forms the basis of whether you should play or not.
I am a poker player of relativity short experience but in that short experience, I have found the tables full of people who are shortstacked having demonstrated no skill whatsoever all to quick to criticize others play and all to eager to accept the role of table "expert" and quantifier of skill of the players. Most really good players are reluctant to blurt out "you should done this", "what a donk play"
(kinda like Rudy Giulani - so quick to say he is a hero. This is not a political jab but don't most real heroes say "I did what I had to do" or let others extoll their heroism?). Most real experts don't run around saying "Hey! Me Me Me! I'm the expert!". It is somewhat illogical to coach your opponents and assist them to defeat you. If they were any good they could martial this "expert" advice to take
your chips - not to mention demonstrates a lack of discipline. If some one at my table is routinely making bad plays
I hope they keep it up so I can catch them. In my opinion it takes a certain lack of maturity to namecall strangers at the table and from the losers lounge. I've seen this far too much and it seems to betray a weakness of character.
That you are evaluating your own play is the path to becoming better.
Consider all factors not just hand strength. In review I have found much of the weakness in my game is not in the hand of poor players - it is with me.....
I think you need to assess the factors of the hand. Let me give you an example. It is a statistical fact that
7 2 is the weakest pocket pair in Holdem. It is a hand that is typically mucked by almost every player in most situations. Her is one of many exceptions
(this happened to me and I'm sure many others): You're shorthanded on the button or in the blinds and you've been controlling the table, it's limped or folded to you and you have
7s 2s - you decide to call
(I'm not advocating playing this hand everytime) the flop comes
7d 7h 2c. One of the limpers has
Qs Qh. He was reluctant to bet because you've been running well and he wanted to sandbag you if he could. He big bets or goes all in. You call the turn comes
7 river comes
Q. You bust him and the namecalling begins. Sure you would have folded had he made a representative bet, but his reluctance to do that caused his own demise.
Do you really care what someone like this says? Usually the people who just can't seem to win because "other players are always in with the worse cards" are just fooling themselves.Net net any hand will take it's share of bad beats. If you're really going in with the best of it all of the time you would happily take the occasional bad beat - because you will be a "net winner". I'd just consider he's mad because you busted him and can't control himself. This is a condition
(lack of discipline) that frequently leads to poor play....
