Ok so I had a game with some friends last night. We played 15 dollar buy in, low stakes for fun. I have not played in virtually any hands all night but have managed to steal some blinds and bluff people out of some big pots to remain even stacked. I'm on the button and receive JJ. UTG raises to 5 dollars pre. He is the big stack and has been making these raises regularly to steal blinds. I wanted the hand to end right there since I put him on over cards and didnt want to flip. So I shoved him knowing I was most likely ahead and he would fold since this was the first pre flop re raise I have made all night. He calls all in, flips up A10 and rivers an ace.my first question is should I have just flatted pre and re raised a dry flop with no over cards? He justified his call with A10 with "it's a nice looking hand". Was his call of my all in correct? Because I would never make that call in a million years

I don't get it..is this cash or tournament?

A $15 buy-in you say but you say he raises to $5 pre?

It's hard to say really, as I've no idea of stack sizes or anything :s

Like you said it's for fun. The $15.00 wasn't a lot to you guys. So he was gonna call with the ace/ten no matter what. Overall I think you made the right decision and, it was a mistake for him to call you.

How many chips did he have in his big stack? If he had 4x your chip stack or so & it was a tourney, then I think he made a risky call but not a bad call.I would of assumed he had an Ace/Jack or better from UTG. Pre flop odds he had a 28% chance of beating you with A/10.You had about a 72% chance of beating him with JJ.

I like seeing a flop with JJ then deciding what to do after that. Usually raise pre instead of all in

Well, reraising a utg open with jj might not always be the best idea but given that you said he was doing it quite frequently then it was a solid play. Don't be upset that you lost because you were a huge favorite when he called and had to hit one of 3 outs. You made a good play and he got lucky, that is poker. You can have all the skill in the world and know every single thing about the game of poker and still lose in one night to a drunk guy that runner-runners you. Just keep in mind that your edge will prevail in the long run and you will make more money than him.

Well he got lucky to hit an ace on the river. JJ was the better hand starting off and this particular time it didnt hold up against A10, better luck next time :)

JJ is an odds favourite against literally anything that isn't a higher pocket pair. If his raising range was wide, putting him on overcards was probably premature -- I would honestly consider that a good spot to flat it and see the flop, or even just shove in hoping for a call.

So basically, I echo what everyone else said. Your play was solid, it's just bad luck he sucked out that Ace. Better luck next time eh? ;)
