Just wondering peoples thoughts on this hand, would you have played it differently? I think my preflop raise should have been bigger but anything else?
Thanks for your help

Fold unless you have a specific "he is dumb enough to trap with Ace/rag" read on the guy.

The check/raise usually indicates strength better than TPTK. A/4 maybe?

If he was in a habit of making these sort of big moves, I might call. But with no other information, easy fold. I'm not stacking with TPTK.

hi there

what u did?... if i was on your place.. i would have call it.. since he call your good raise preflop.. he probably had AQ AK A10 or probably medium pair.. not a small pair or A3 A4 on hand that u get bothered by the flop or the river... hope i made a little help... good luck to your other games...

I'm probably not calling that river shove. Maybe, but something is just wrong here. It might be that your opponent is trying to steal this pot, or he wants to get paid for his good hand. It is one of those two. Try not to think about his exact two cards here. What matters is that he bet the river because he knows he is ahead or because he thinks he can get you to lay down. Whichever one it is he needs good reason to think it. He doesn't have good reason to think you will lay down. So he wants to get paid. Let's look at what he has seen. You raised PF, bet/called on the flop, and called the turn. You have been putting money into the pot on every possible round of betting so far. And thats what he expects to happen again. And he bets anyway. So he knows he is ahead. So save some money, fold the one pair hand, and remember all things are relative.

He showed the full house with A4. I think I knew I was beat but was hoping for AQ and stupidly called. It's definatley one of my biggest leaks, getting a rush of blood and calling all in rivers, I need to find that fold button! Thanks for the replies and spot on SavagePenguin!

yes, he raised on the turn.. so i would have though he would have hit a set of 4.
Anyway you had a good hand, pair of aces and k kicker.. i dont know what i would have done, but he raise on the turn would have scared me for sure.

I also get way too attached to AK....I play more tourneys than ring, but, AK has cost me many a tourney.....Zorba made a post earlier....same thing....guy knew he was behind, but had AK and called all the way to river.....I guess, you have to realize that when they call your big raise they have SOMETHING......the guy with Ace 4....I don't know why people make these plays.....but they do. I think you could have folded the turn here, at least putting him on a set....the 3s..he was set mining and found his set....not much you could do there, I don't think.

See, now, I don't think this one was so bad.
First off, vollproll1 is a non-issue himself. You can't give short stacks like that too much respect and I'm doing everything I can to get all his chips in.

vollproll1's greatest significance here is that he is sweetening the pot. Both you and Matyula want to isolate yourselves with him, so you're each apt to make isolation bets. So in this case, TPTK is often good enough because Matyula will often be making this move with a weaker ace.

The 2 on the river could have filled a straight, but by that time calling was mandatory.

So the way I see it, you were playing for the side pot against Matyula. If you win that side pot, you make a profit plus a bonus if you win the main pot as well (which is very likely). And I think you're going to beat Matyula about half the time there, more or less.

Now, if vollproll1 wasn't in the hand it would be a different story. We'd be back to the "don't stack with top pair/top kicker without a specific read" scenario I mentioned at the top of the thread.
