Reads on villain?

Fold preflop. There's no way calling an UTG raise oop with A small is a long term +EV move.

Postflop is fine. If he has a set, it's just a cooler. A big ace is a lot more likely combination wise and both types of hands probably bet the same way here.

Unless UTG is loose, I'm mucking A/8s pre-flop. He has position on us.

On the turn we're obviously on a mission to get all of out chips in. A set of aces isn't likely, so we're pretty much fearing a set of 5's or 3's. That has a lot of his possible hands (pocket over-pairs, AJ+, etc.) beat.

That's what I was thinking too -- should have folded preflop. Villain is TAG, 16/14/2. So it was alright to get my stack in with top 2 pair on the turn? Holdem Manager shows my equity there as 4.5%. Can someone explain that number? Does it represent a 4.5% edge over a typical range of hands in that spot?

Villian did have a set (888).

Strangely, after 2+ hours of play and 492 hands, I ended up exactly even for the session. This hand was my major misstep.

It means you had 2 outs (4+%) to win on the turn when most of the money went in.

So it took into account my hand and the villain's hand, and I had a 4.5% chance of improving with two outs left? I get it, thanks.

Stop giving the village nit action without the nuts (or complete air). I don't think you stacked off all that light, but you need to know wether he can do this with AK or not. Knowing if someone will go broke with a 1 pair hand has gotta be the biggest read you can have on anyone, since that makes the range they stack off with either very wide, or very small.

But yeah, fold this preflop since its dominated by like, his entire range.

Yeah, I was definitely hoping he had AK there. Perhaps "hoping" instead of having an actual read was my mistake... other than the bigger mistake of calling preflop.

Stacking of postflop is fine. 88 isn't likely seeing as you have the case 8 then and players this tight will probably muck 55/33 preflop from UTG (i'm like 23/19 and i muck less than 55 from UTG on most tables). This is AQ/AK often enough to stack off imo.

That said, the preflop call is absolutely horrid and should be a snap fold every single time vs villain's opening range from UTG.
