Depending on the turn card, and our reads on villain, yeah we most certainly can! You can still win pots with 2nd pair (I win a ton of them). But 2nd pair is a bluff catcher or a draw. Its hard to find situations where you can bet it for value.
Think about it this way. Both AT and AQ have the same equity against a hand like 8♥8♦
. But by betting this flop, we allow hands like a flush draw to bluff us off of our hand & we fold out 88 and other middle pairs. Our hand has good showdown value, so lets induce some bluffs and get to showdown. And last but not least, our hand can improve against a Q. Any ace, ten, or diamond improves our hand.
The only time I'd c-bet this flop is for value against a super calling station who is peeling the flop with tons of hands other than top pair. And since this player is an unknown, we just can't assume that about him yet.
So yeah, I'd check back this flop, and call any turn that was a ten or lower.
