Checking the flop I'm sure is standard (I haven't been gone THAT long) considering were trying to hit a set.

But do we concede? Check call? Pot it so he can't bluff?

My guesses would be he's holding AK and you should throw out a halfpot sized bet.
You only need him to fold his AK a third of the time to break even here and i really doubt JJ+ has been slowplaying here that often.

This makes no sense. If you think he has AK then a bet on the turn will be for value, not to get him to fold. You want him to call a turn bet with AK drawing to 6 outs. I also bet/fold this turn and if he flats i prob ch/call a small river bet and ch/fold a larger one if the river blanks off.

I was going on the presumption he'd fold if we bet.
I'm betting here more to protect my hand.

I think the value were getting from this hand is negligible. I'm betting here merely to take the pot down and protect our hand.
tbh the fact we have 99 here is irrelevant to me I would bet here with any old junk as I think our villains gunna fold.
Having 99 is a little bonus for those rare occasions he calls us with Ace high or miraculously has a pair lower than our own.

So ye we need him to "fold" AK one third of the time to break even but we may make a little extra if he's the type to call down with Ace high
