This is why I don't do this but I had just read a reply by BelgoSuisse to a post I made and thought maybe I can extract value from set mining a TAG who raises UTG. I decided to flat call because the button had session stats of 27/5 and therefore I thought wouldn't reraise. When he raised I was caught off guard and thought he was squeezing. Of course in retrospect I should have thought that his VP to PFR ratio was so high that even if he limped a lot that his raises did mean something. Nevertheless I thought maybe he was pushing with an Ace and decided to gamble. It seems like whenever I play back at loose players then that is the hand they have the nuts. I either totally suck or am just unlucky or both (probably).

Your original thought about set mining was fine but even if the BTN is just squeezing the range of hands he's doing it with have you crushed. You have to fold to the 3bet.

Right. If he was fully stacked I probably would. I seem pretty willing to get it in against short stackers.

If he was a 20bb stack it's close enough, but when he's got 40bbs you need like 44% equity and it's hard to imagine a range he gets it in with where you have that much. Now if you think he 3bet folds to shove a lot I guess it's close but I just don't see that happening but very rarely.

It's good practice to always think of the players yet to act and have a plan in place as to what to do if they 3-bet.

I do. That's why I rarely flat call, esp in front of button. In this case I looked at the PFR of the button which was pretty low in relation to his VPIP and tried to mix up my play. Obv, I messed it up.

"Mixing up" your play is the wrong way to think, especially at 5nl. He's a loose passive type that just 3-bet squeezed, he has it, simple. The call was fine, just fold when he 3-bets.
