Villain Stats (VPIP/PFR/AF): 48/27/2.7

I find myself not having the stones to call check-raises on the turn for fear of being Beluga'd, but I'm not sure if I'm being overly cautious. Here's a classic for me where I could go either way. The villain is 48/27/2.7. Don't have many notes on him except that he's played junk from all positions (obviously!) and plays both draws & sets aggressively.

Against this aggressive lag, id be happy to stack off on the turn. calling makes no sense, and folding here seems to weak against this guy.

Sure he could turn up here with 2 pair but your hand does still rate to be the best against him.

He's the type of player who will do this with weaker Aces and draws. I shove over his raise and expect to be called by worse a LOT.

Beluga does not apply to 47/28s

His raise on the turn basically was a shove. I wouldn't be able to push him in if I decided to continue, but I think I get your point.

As I mentioned, I guess I'm basically gun shy w/ chk-raises on the turn. Normally though (if he had 2 barreled for instance), I know I'm ahead and it would have been an instant call.

IMO, insta-call. Sometimes I win, sometimes not. But that's exactly the sort of situation where you want to be fully bankrolled to play whatever level. You should be staying in that hand, especially with that sort of opponent.

What? You think the 2 helped him? Look at the whole hand -- he'd been calling preflop and on the flop. Unless he had pocket 2s, you are probably good. If not, so be it.

I'd suggest you might want to play cap NL short ring for awhile. The cap lets you feel more comfortable about going to showdown, and it can help you learn to get the stones to make the plays. Erica Schoenberg did a session video of a cap game at FT Poker Academy, which should give you a bit of a sense of that game. I'm finding it rather enjoyable.

No, I meant if he had 2-barreled ... if he bet the flop & turn, I probably would have called him to the showdown or maybe raised the turn thinking he had a pair. If he had done that & been a typical agromonkey, I would have let him dig his own hole figuring he just had a pair.
