9 handed, no history on any opponents
(MP+2) Hero Stack: $3.17
(BB) Villain Stack: $2.54

Hero looks down at AsJh.folds around to MP+1 who calls 5¢
Hero raises to 25¢.
folds to villain from BB who calls for an additional 20¢.
MP+1 folds.

FLOP - Ah6s4d - $0.57 pot (2 players)

villain from BB checks.
Hero continues for $0.38
villain calls.

TURN - Ah6s4d-Qs - $1.33 pot (2 players)
BB checks.
Hero think he is still ahead but plays it passively and checks back.

  • Is checking the turn acceptable in hero's spot? I feel more people would rather bet (I would, but for that reason I decided to check.)

Checking turn for pot control/inducing bluffs is standard here against an unknown. But since he's a half stack, he's probably a fish. I keep banging on the turn.

Why do you only have $3?

Bought in short with my microstakes/freeroll bankroll for the challenge I am trying to complete (in my signature)

Buying in short doesn't reduce your variance much. That's mostly determined by the size of the big blind.

Play 2NL.

In fact, this hand is in history, but I will answer your question.
In my opinion, it is better to continue betting when your opponent checks you, according to the scenario that you describe.

1 of the few reads I'm aware of in cash games:
Look for players with less than max buy-in, auto top-up off: very often inexperienced
With auto top-up BRM becomes more of an issue; typical for cash games

By checking you show Villain or make Villain think that you are not that strong. If he goes all-in on the river, what do you do? By betting on the turn you stay in the stronger position I believe. Unless he is slow playing with AA or set or double pair, but I don't think so.
And how did that hand end actually?

I rather cbet on the turn for 3/4 of the pot and check on the river. And you still have the option to reevaluate on the river just in case the villain flopped monsters hand base on the villain betsize.
