Hello everybody,

Since this is my first post on here, I'll introduce myself real quick.
I'm a poker player from the netherlands. I've recently decided to start taking poker more seriously and I'm trying to get better at the game. I have been grinding NL2 and I've recently decided to take a shot at NL5. I recently joined this forum to learn some new things and hopefully improve my game.

Today one of my last hands of a session this happend:

PokerStars - $0.05 NL - Holdem - 8 players
Hand converted by PokerTracker 4

BTN: 88.6 BB (VPIP: 23.14, PFR: 16.53, 3Bet Preflop: 8.51, Hands: 125)
SB: 103 BB (VPIP: 13.56, PFR: 11.86, 3Bet Preflop: 4.00, Hands: 59)
BB: 100 BB
UTG: 110.2 BB (VPIP: 19.05, PFR: 12.93, 3Bet Preflop: 2.91, Hands: 298)
UTG+1: 81 BB (VPIP: 20.83, PFR: 12.50, 3Bet Preflop: 0.00, Hands: 96)
MP: 136 BB (VPIP: 15.16, PFR: 13.55, 3Bet Preflop: 7.41, Hands: 316)
MP+1: 120 BB (VPIP: 15.28, PFR: 10.56, 3Bet Preflop: 4.03, Hands: 363)
Hero (CO): 117.6 BB

SB posts SB 0.4 BB, BB posts BB 1 BB

Pre Flop: (pot: 1.4 BB) Hero has J<font color='red'>♥</font> K<font color='black'>♣</font>

fold, fold, fold, fold, Hero raises to 3 BB, fold, fold, BB calls 2 BB

Flop: (6.4 BB, 2 players) Q<font color='red'>♥</font> 2<font color='black'>♣</font> 9<font color='red'>♦</font>
BB checks, Hero bets 4.2 BB, BB calls 4.2 BB

Turn: (14.8 BB, 2 players) Q<font color='red'>♦</font>
BB checks, Hero checks

River: (14.8 BB, 2 players) T<font color='black'>♣</font>
BB bets 11 BB, Hero raises to 32 BB, BB raises to 92.8 BB and is all-in

what to do?

I found this to be a fairly difficult spot for a few reasons. I think he has no bluffs in his range when he jams the river and I could therefore easily be beat by a full house or maybe even quads. However, I also think our hand is pretty high up in our range of possible holdings. I'm afraid that if I go about folding straights to river shoves I might lose a lot of value from trips or weirdly played AA or KK.

please let me know what you guys think, any help would be much appreciated.

papa bless

I think this is a definite call.

He calls the open-raise PF defending his BB. If he was to have QQ I would assume he would 3Bet preflop. That is the standard play. His range will be pretty wide with the call PF.

There is a lot of cards he could have here but I think this is a call imo. there are a lot of hands you beat.

Pre flop is ok cbet is ok. Checking turn is ok if you think he wont fold his pairs or something like 98, T9 etc. Frankly i would check here also cause i think whathever called the raise pre and called a cbet is not folding to a Q on the turn and you do get to realize your equtiy cheaply so checking is the best play unless you have info on him.

You could also decide to just call the riv when he leads out and go for SD value. Its would actually be a really solid play due to the fact that you do have the blockers to the hands he might raise his Qx. You have KJ and he could very likely be holding QJ or KQ in this spot but when you have these blockers in your hand its less likely for him to have those hands so calling the riv makes a lot of sense. You should also disregard AQ cause he would probably 3bet that pre. Whether if you had something like J 8 rasing his bet on the riv would be much better cause now there are more hands in his range that you beat.

Assign a range in pokerstove and see if you made a good call given the odds on the riv. Getting 2.3 to 1 we need 30% equity to break and i think many players will overvalue their trips on these limits + were are at the top of our range here.

So to sum up the mistake was probably the our raise on the riv. Facing a 3bet is just a math decision now. I think that if you think he shoves here with QJ or worse its a call. If you think that he shoves here with KQ or better ( disregarding AQ) its a mathematicly good fold.

Thanks for your feedback,

I agree that the raise at the end was the mistake. I ended up calling and he showed me 99.
