You have to call river. You are getting better then 4:1 on the call. I think you are beating your opponents range. Maybe you should have re-raised flop but i like just calling.

any reads on villain?

This flop raise is so BS, I'd pop it to $1.25 and then shove the turn. I think it's very possible he backed into a flush with something like QJhh, KQhh, AJhh or 97HH, but I'd still call the river, he still has a lot more random 1-pair hands than stuff that beats you.

With that board, there are tons of one-pair hands and straight draws that won't fold. Charge his brains out for more cards. Re-raise flop.

Call river.

Only reads were the stats and it seemed quite a fishy table. He took a long time thinking about the turn bet but seemed to pop the river bet pretty quickly.

Good read, it was unfortunately very possible :(

Thanks Kyle - next time I'll reraise flop, and then a large near-pot size bet would hopefully have pushed him off his 87 of hearts...

I like to raise a bit more preflop especially at those limits. Raise the flop, I would love to get it in there.

As played you would be dumb to fold the river

Raise more pre-flop seems to be a pretty consistent message so going to change from 3-4x +1 per limper to 4-5x +1 per limper on average, cheers :)

I don't think "raise more preflop" is a universal rule, but it's probably a good idea.

Some things to consider:

1) NL5 is full of calling stations, so putting more money in the pot when you are sure you are ahead is never a bad idea.
2) If you always raise 3xBB for most of your hands and 4xBB for your premium hands, then it's pretty obvious what you are doing. The opps at your level may or may not notice. I play around that level and I'm constantly on the lookout for obvious AA and KK to setmine, but I'm not your ordinary NL5 player. Is there anyone at your table you fear giving this info away too?
3) If your table is rather tight and you are MP, it's not a bad idea to be aggressive pre-flop and just take it down there, rather than put yourself in an awkward spot OOP if the flop is ugly.

Raising more pre-flop is fine, especially at this level, but be thinking constantly about all the factors that go into a poker play, so you can be ready to move up soon.

I agree with point 1 entirely. Point 2 - I raise 3x to 4x depending on position and how loose/tight the villains left to play are, as opposed to the strength of my hand :) Completely agree with point 3. I'm not planning on moving up for a long time yet, I'd rather be completely comfortable at 5NL than decide to take pot shots at $10NL before I'm ready and not have something to fall back on ,and my play has got a long way to come yet :)
