Good fold! I'd say the odds of you being beat by an Ace were just shy of 100%. He could easily have also been holding one of the Queens that you needed as his kicker. I doubt he had a 4. I can't see him raising pre-flop with even a suited A4 unless he was setting you up for a bluff on the flop. He might do that though with a 99.

When I see a guy that far ahead in stack size at a cash game it tells me that he's on a lucky streak and he's aggressive. Aggressive alone doesn't usually do the job.

C-bet the flop for 2$ max (you don't need to go over 1/2 pot in 3-bet or 4-bet pots, btw) and be done with it.
If you're up against AK or 99, then they're not folding, but you could fold out KK and every other non-A and take it down immediately.

As played, I wouldn't even bother stabbing the turn. Just check again and see what happens.

As played this might very well be a bluff (especially since you announced you didn't have an A on the flop), and you're only calling 2.20 to win 11.33, so meh.
