$5 NL HE 6-max: Is this properly value betting a calling station?

Villian Stats (VPIP/PFR/AF): 27/24/3

Only reason I called here was because I was on the button with somewhat of a good hand against a guy with a high vpip, who raised often pre flop. Looking back, these kinds of calls should be mad with a king or ace no?

I figured catching a queen or him maybe showing weakness postflop would allow me to steal the pot.

Then BB with a vpip of about 47 (only 15 hands though) also calls.

Did I play this hand well taking into account these 2 guys were very very loose?

BB: $2.05 (41 bb)
UTG: $1.89 (37.8 bb)
MP: $7.30 (146 bb)
CO: $5 (100 bb)
Hero (BTN): $6.78 (135.6 bb)
SB: $5.35 (107 bb)

Pre-Flop: Hero is BTN with Q

UTG folds, MP raises to $0.17, CO folds, Hero calls $0.17, SB folds, BB calls $0.12

Flop: ($0.53) 3

(3 players)
BB bets $0.10, MP calls $0.10, Hero calls $0.10

I was pretty sure I had this very loose guy with my top pair. Looking back, if he had a crap ace or king, I should have re-raised him here.

Turn: ($0.83) 4

(3 players)
BB bets $0.15, MP folds, Hero raises to $0.30, BB calls $0.15

Here I raised because this is not a scare card and I wanted to end the betting. I should have raised more but...i dont have that strong a hand so i was pot controlling (does that make sense?)

River: ($1.43) 2

(2 players)
BB checks, Hero checks

Results: $1.43 pot ($0.09 rake)
Final Board: 3

I think on the turn, you shouldn't be afraid of making a big raise here. When you make that min-raise, there is almost no fold equity because of the pot-odds.

I think that if you make a substantial/meaningful raise on the turn, it gives you information and it starts putting the question to him:

1) If he calls the raise, you know that he is somewhat serious about his hand. He is a loose player so the board could have hit his hand somehow.

2) It threatens another BIG bet on the river.. villian is OOP and after calling your raise he needs to act first. So, if you are actually behind and are happy to check-down, you might freeze the betting on the river. As played, villian checked anyways so it's a wash but this won't always be the case. Sometimes he will bet and you won't be sure if you want to call or not. Although at these stakes, I'd lean towards a call..

3) If re-raises you or calls your raise and leads on the river, you can probably fold.

4) Lastly, if you have the best hand, it gets more money into the pot

So the pot is .53 and he bet .10? That's a pretty weak continuation bet. I'd bump that up to like .40. If he's a call station he should have no trouble with the extra 30 cents. The raises in the pot and your re-raise are much too small in comparison to the pot. You don't just raise out of some number - I try to make my raises between 1/2 pot at the very least to 1x the pot at most. Most of my raises are around 2/3 the pot, but if I'm value betting a call station I'd be likely to make it nearly pot size.

You also might have wanted to bet the river. I know this is easy in foresight, and even I would be hesitant to bet the river there - but you have to take into consideration BB reputation. By not betting the river you're missing out on a lot of value.

You do have a relatively strong hand, top pair good kicker for 3 people is generally pretty strong. You weren't seeing any real strength from anyone else.

BTW: Your pre-flop call was fine. With call stations, just get into hands with them. If you miss, c/f but if you hit they're great to bet for value. Nothing wrong with the pf call.

You got some advice that the preflop call was good vs call stations but Im of the other opinion. Sure if you hit a queen you have a decent hand, but your kicker is terrible and since they are call stations When your playing a call station at low stakes you want a hand that has great showdown value and Q9 is rarely getting great showdown value postflop. Thats probably the best flop your going to see with Q9 and raising is a must imo. Call station will call with worse overs, draws, etc.

Fold preflop.

as played:

  • Raise flop
  • Raise turn more
  • Bet River small (if against station and not the LAG)
There is a ton of draws out here to take advantage off and seep out some value. If we end up outkicked its tough shit.

Pot control is all well and good but when against a calling station you fling pot control with top pair out the window and just bet bet bet until the draws hit or we are raised.
