PokerStars - $0.05 NL (6 max) - Holdem - 6 players

MP: $9.19 (VPIP: 24.39, PFR: 21.95, 3Bet Preflop: 6.67, Hands: 83)
CO: $2.84 (VPIP: 15.00, PFR: 12.50, 3Bet Preflop: 8.11, Hands: 123)
BTN: $2.45 (VPIP: 50.00, PFR: 25.00, 3Bet Preflop: 0.00, Hands: 4)
Hero (SB): $5.00
BB: $4.12 (VPIP: 18.60, PFR: 9.30, 3Bet Preflop: 0.00, Hands: 45)

Hero posts SB $0.02, BB posts BB $0.05

Pre Flop: (pot: $0.07) Hero has 5:club: 5:spade:

UTG calls $0.05, fold, CO raises to $0.20, fold, Hero calls $0.18, fold, UTG calls $0.15

Flop: ($0.65, 3 players) 5:heart: 7:spade: 6:heart:
Hero bets $0.39, UTG calls $0.39, fold

Turn: ($1.43, 2 players) 8:club:
Hero bets $0.86, UTG raises to $1.72, Hero calls $0.86

River: ($4.87, 2 players) 5:diamond:
Hero bets $2.69 and is all-in, UTG calls $0.67 and is all-in

Hero shows 5:club: 5:spade: (Four of a Kind, Fives)
(Pre 52%, Flop 86%, Turn 26%)
UTG shows J:diamond: 9:club: (Straight, Nine High)
(Pre 48%, Flop 14%, Turn 74%)
Hero wins $5.95

When I bet turn, and he min raised I instantly put him on 9 therefore having a straight, I was completely sure. However I almost folded to his reraise because I knew I was beat. I then took into account pot and the remainder of his stack if I hit my Full house.

I'm not sure but I feel that I played the hand badly. Some would say I should ship over the top on the turn, but since I knew he had the straight I was 100% I actually would have considered folding the river. So do I have odds to call? I worked out it was 86cents more to win a total pot of $6 and I was 26% to hit.

Why are you betting turn? Do you think much worse is going to call? I'd go for a check call on turn. He will pay your boat off no matter what in the river if he has the straight anyways

You do make a good point and perhaps I should have check called. My only reason for betting was that this guy was an absolute drooler station, he would called down with j3off suit to the river with no pair. However, he never ever raised without nuts.

Without commenting on the way you played leading up to this point, I'll just comment on the mathematics of the turn raise:

On the turn, assuming that the villain has 9x in his hole cards, you have 10 outs (5, 6, 6, 6, 7, 7, 7, 8, 8, 8) out of 45 remaining cards, giving you a 1 in 4.5 chance, or 22% chance, of winning.

You are calling $0.86 to win $4.68 (assuming you stack the villain when you hit your boat/quads), meaning that you only need an 18% chance of winning to justify peeling another street. Thus it is indeed a profitable "boat mine" when you factor in implied odds, assuming you plan on check-folding the river when you miss your boat and you plan on stacking the villain every time you hit your boat.

So once you got yourself into that position on the turn (where the villain min-raised you and you were certain he had a straight), it was still a +EV call for the sake of trying to hit a full house or better on the river.

Thank you for the advice Matthew, according to poker tracker I am 26% I do believe that you forgot to factor in the fact that the board could also bring a 9 which would result in a chop.

By the way, the way the whole hand played out is a welcome discussion point, if you feel I could have played the hand better on earlier streets then by all means comment.

Turn bet should be fine since the 8 does complete quite a bit of 2 pair hands that are not folding and flush draws are still calling for this size. He also may bluff with flush draws on this turn. Whole hand is pretty solid imo.

Why not?? Tight players with sets may fold and ppl with 2pair will often think we r bluffing. We r semi bluffing this and if we are behind we still drawing to nuts

With the line that I took, there was no point re shoving the extra 60cents, he was calling no matter what and I put him on a 9 was sure about it as sure can be.

Yeah but it's all about getting the money in when we can.. You don't want to leave any off the table. That's why I shove turn incase our villain gets doubts on river.

You can bet bigger than on flop or check-raise.
