A'ight, here's a hand I'd like some thoughts on. Villain is 26/21/3.5 over 250 hands.

poker stars, $2/$4 NL Hold'em Cash Game, 6 Players
Hand History Converter by Stoxpoker

UTG: $405 (101.3 bb)
Hero (MP): $467.30 (116.8 bb)
CO: $404 (101 bb)
BTN: $418 (104.5 bb)
SB: $481 (120.3 bb)
BB: $1,198.90 (299.7 bb)

Pre-Flop: Hero is MP with 2

UTG folds, Hero raises to $16, 3 folds, BB calls $12

If he check-raises bigger here I just shove, but now he's put us in a spot where shoving is a little big, and 3betting smaller gives him the chance to shove over us, losing us some of our FE.

I still probably just shove. He's running a bluff or semibluff a lot of the time on that type of board and we can often get it in as a big favourite over a smaller draw as well as get some great FE against 99 and similar hands.

Usually I get it in here, we have decent FE, and if he calls the shove his range probably consists of a fair number of draws as well, so we should be in pretty decent shape.

I don't like flatting here as we reduce our equity on a blank turn. Get it in imo.

i shove (or make a committing 3bet if you think that looks stronger) and i don't think it's particularly close. an aggressive opponent could easily c/r bluff this board. we can fold out better hands some of the time, but folding out non-paired bluffs is no tragedy at all since our hand is of course very vulnerable and virtually any card that doesn't improve us could be a scare card

I raised to $170, he shoved and I called, getting 1.4:1 odds.

Why only $170? So that he shoves with the weakest part of his range, i.e. weaker draws that you crush? I mean by not raising more, you do sacrifice some FE against hands like overpairs that coin-flip with you, right? So you need to make that up somewhere.

I think he wouldn't fold most overpairs anyway (people don't do that a lot), so I wanted to give him a chance to come over the top with a weaker FD or a straight draw.
In terms of EV I don't think it makes a huge difference whether I shove or 3-bet to a modest amount, but I'm not entirely sure.
