I probably would have raised preflop. Other than that, there isn't much you could do excpet just calling on the river to save some chips.

As for the hand itself, I don't think you played it that bad. I might raise pre-flop (to force out the type of hand that wound up beating you, ironically), but checking isn't horrible. On the flop, we have a full house, although it isn't really a good full house. Maybe this will help explain things (even though your sort of on the other side of this situation): http://www.thepokerbank.com/strategy/theorems/zeebo/.

Do not EVER post out of position.

this. Also, pocket 8s deserves a raise preflop. The minraise on the turn was horrible, i wouldve popped it to 24 cents. Not sure what I wouldve done on the river as played because it's so hard to give someone credit for 4 of a kind, so good pot control on the river, you definitely could have lost a lot more than you did

- Don't post outside the blinds. There are one or two arguable exceptions, but posting before the blinds hit you is invariably bad.

- Raise pf. Especially given that you've posted in MP, you generally won't get credit for as strong a hand as you have, and are more likely to get paid off by marginal hands if you flop big, so it's in your interest to start swelling the pot as quickly as possible.

- Raise more on the turn. What are you looking to acheive by minraising? Raise more on the turn and if he leads river for 3/4 pot or something then check-calling becomes far more feasible and hence you don't face awkward decisions when he 3-bets the river (fwiw I think river as played is okay).

I seem to be missing some lingo here, "Do not EVER post out of position" could you guys explain this?

When you sit at a table you're given the option of posting the big blind immediately or waiting until the big blind comes around to you before posting. Although you may be eager to jump in straight away, posting immediately is a long-run losing proposition as you're essentially posting a big blind that you don't have to.
