I'm a little unsure how my opponent was able to call me down in this hand and scoop the pot. I'd appreciate any insights. Thanks!

UTG (starts out with 4.09) raised preflop to 0.12 and action folded to me in the SB (starts out with 1.69) with 9h8h. I called. BB folded.

Flop was 3c 4h 7s.

Action on the flop goes check, check.

Turn card was 4c.

I decide that his range is not strong compared to what I might have and bet out half pot. Villain calls. Pot is now 0.56.

River is 5d.

I bet out full pot of 0.56 and villain tanks and calls to win the pot with AhKs.

Was my bet sizing wrong on the river? How could he be sure enough to call that he guessed that I didn't hit the board and didn't have a pair?

That certainly is an interesting hand. It's not like he was chasing a flush or anything like that to keep calling and to call on the river with only the pair is pretty risky. Only other thing I could think is that he thought you were only chasing the straight and assuming you have no pair he knows he wins. It's definitely not a normal play and normally you could bluff someone off the pot if they hand nothing but a high card but could just be one of those weird hands he was gonna call everything. I wonder what his stats were if you have them (VPIP and all that) and whether he left the table soon afterwards?

stop bluffing with junk at the micros ,just check it down against guys that can't fold especially where there range is likely strong. His range is likely to be full of pocket pairs and and some big Ax hands and not much else.what do you expect him to do with his 88 - TT hands ? he's never going to fold them , so why bluff into him.

Also why are you so short stacked?

If you're going to bluff, bet the flop.

That's a heck of a call. Nits aside, I think in general micro players make way more calling mistakes than folding mistakes, so it's just not all that profitable to bluff. Just value bet and you might do better.

Also I don't think this is a great board to bluff. The turn only added a flush draw for you to represent, and it doesn't get there on the river. If you were in position and he checked to you and you bet the flop then your hand looks scarier, but that's a different situation. Try to think about your plan for the whole hand and how you're going to make profit, and in general I would advise not bluffing too much, particularly out of position.

Fold pre-flop. As played, bad turn bet. Bad river bet. Std river call w/ AK.

In today's games, even at micro limits, people understand hand ranges way better. They also understand how bluffing ranges open up on checked low boards.
