I don't understand your line at all, pre is fine but flop you bet half pot, check turn and then bomb river? I guess he could be bluffing here since your line looks pretty suspect so I think you have to call as played? Try to stick to more standard lines when OOP so you don't get into spots like this where you may level yourself into calls/folds.

When I was called on the flop I wanted to check turn for pot control as QQ is a high possibility here, but also by checking the turn it may get him to call a river bet with things like 99-JJ if the river bricks as it did.

I was close to calling as we would expect to see QQ, AKcc or a bluff here as like you said my line did look pretty weak. Not quite sure why I bet half pot, usually always bet 60-70%. I don't like it myself looking at it now.

Do you think I would of been better of betting flop and turn and shoving river ?

I think it's irrelevant that your line looks strange. You bet small on the flop, and got called, then bet pretty large on river and got raised small. This isn't a bluff very often. Your opponents line looks exactly like what it is. I'd believe them, and bet the flop bigger and turn next time. It's better to get value against your opponents whole range on the turn, then hope they will call river bets or bluff (unless you know their tendencies). You'll actually lose value against most opponents when they do have draws and give up, or they still don't call with their mid pair hands. Additionally, you're just giving them free cards to out draw you even if they only have a small amount of equity.

I did end up folding. What % pot would you bet the flop and turn John and as played just shove river ?

Thanks for the comments Lads :)

I guess my aim here with an over pair is to GII by the river and if I am up against QQ then it's just a cooler right.

You're seeing ghosts if you're afraid of QQ here. Villain can have Qx or a flush draw far more often than anything that beats you. I think you should just bet the turn for straight value, and look to shove on all brick river cards.
