4 of a Kind- was I just lucky?

Ok, I played this hand some time ago:

$5/$10 NL Holdem, 6 handed table, I hold 5,5

Three fold before me, leaving only two players after me, and one of them is very very tight. I min-raise to $20.

Next player folds, leaving the tight player (BB), who calls the $10

Now Heads up, and the flop comes: 5,5,J

I make the killer hand, but if i bet im nearly sure he will fold. I check. He checks.

Turn makes the board: 5,5,J,8

I check again, and he bets $20
I raise to $40
He calls

River makes the board: 5,5,J,8,J

I go all in $120
He calls me and shows full house J,9

I know I won, but I just wasn't sure if I played this hand correctly. I just felt uncomfortable the whole time. The last Jack seemed the only thing that saved me.

I never ever ever ever ever ever mini raise anything in any position at any time of the day during anytime of the week. Its a silly play, you allow pretty much anyone to come in the pot behind you with tons of specultive hands.

I dont check here, I never check the flop, I always continuation bet so if I check here it looks like I have big hand.

I never mini raise here it looks soooo much like you have the 5 I would of folded the J to your mini raise becuase I would of put you on A5 right away. Of course you had better.

River makes the board: 5,5,J,8,J

I go all in $120
He calls me and shows full house J,9


he got unlucky here bottom line, as for shoving ummm there was only $120 in pot so I would of bet like $60 - $75 to try to get value of course in this example wouldnt of mattered though.

I know I won, but I just wasn't sure if I played this hand correctly. I just felt uncomfortable the whole time. The last Jack seemed the only thing that saved me.

I'll give a different view, and you should know I am not playing those kinds of tables. However;

I am not against the min raise the way so many around here are. It is a tool that many many many many people misuse, or are too lazy to make the bet 3x or more cause it is so convenient to click the raise button.

Preflop I generally agree the minraise sucks, that is the main place folks misuse it. Post flop there are neat places where the minraise will lure in the fish where a standard raise will be like throwing rocks in the pond right where you want to cast.

The end result in this case suggests you played this hand right. You got all your money in, and got all his money in as well. before he hit his boat, I think its possible a standard raise might have given him enough pause to maybe fold. Maybe not, but your minraise sucked him in.

Truly, most everyone around here hates the whole notion of the minraise. Luckily before I showed up here I had learned the evils of the minraise and so the arguments they made and still make about the dreaded minraise made, and still do make sense. I just think that there are those places where the minraise has so much power that one should not dismiss it so cavalierly.

Separate issue, is the $200 at the 5/10 game too little, too much, what? Maybe he had been sitting there a while and his starting stack had changed. This is an area of poker I know next to nothing about. Please enlighten .......

Actually dj, I have nothing against the minraise on the flop or turn or river, I use it in many situations and against some opponents.

However, PF is a different story. I can understand once in a while in some tourney scenarios doing it with aces or kings in EP when table is aggressive and you expect someone to reraise or squeeze, so basically you're using it as a means to gain more value. Either than that, I never ever minraise PF, and I suppose you know why.

I agree with the others, preflop play is suspect. I do like the min-raise on the turn though. And I like the shove on the river. I think betting something into the flop is a good idea, actually, given the scenario.

Was this really at a 1/2 table? Or as pointed out above, wtf with the $200 stack at 5/10?
