At the time of my bet, my hand just crushes his range so hard that my goal is to get a nice pot going that I can fire a flop and turn bet into and have stacks in the middle.
Say I raise to 3x. I make it $2.25 and he calls, the pot is $4.50 with an SPR of ~5. Not bad if I flop an overpair, but over half the time that's not going to be the case, and when we get stacks in, I don't really love how my TT looks.
When I make it $3.25 and he calls the pot is $6.50, the SPR is 3.4. I'm much more comfortable shipping stacks in with one overcard in this scenario than the above one.
With such a wide opening range, I also assumed that he was going to flat my 3bet pretty wide as well, and this was the scenario for which I was preparing. When he 4bet me, my whole hand's gameplan got trashed and I had to try and decide what to do in response.
