Forgive me my very basic questions - but I am only now starting to really take this seriously and I need help on the most basic things. I am doing pretty good with my pre-flop play ( or so I think lol) - it is post flop that I am struggling with. I had just been at this table for a few hands so have no reads on anyone yet.

pokerstars Game #20354472529: Hold'em No Limit ($0.10/$0.25) - 2008/09/12 17:17:27 ET

928racer: calls $0.25
willoby26: calls $0.25
Fokkus77: folds
dakota-xx: raises $0.50 to $0.75
Sephiroth337: folds
Mr Laras: folds
928racer: calls $0.50
willoby26: calls $0.50

With 2 callers do I continue to bet even though I missed the flop or just check? And was my raise pre-flop the right amount?

Your preflop raise makes me vomit. $1.75 please. You want to at least make a pot sized raise here preflop (which would be to $1.60).

I wouldn't hate c-betting this flop, but if these players are on the bad side (and they probably are) checking's fine too and certainly lower variance.

lol - go clean your shirt now. I had no idea I would need to raise that many times the blind. Forget what I said about being okay with my pre-flop play then!

Yeah, when there are no limpers in, raising to 3x the big blind is a decent sized raise (because its close to pot sized). A potsized raise with no limpers is to 3.5xbb's, which is why the 3xbb's + 1 for every limper rule is used.

Additionally, I raise even more than that when there are limpers because:

1) They limped, their hands are usually behind your range.
2) Their hands are usually implied odds hands, and we want to deny them implied odds by putting lots of money in the pot early.
3) They are more likely to call a raise since they've already put money in the pot, so go ahead and exploit your preflop equity edge even more.

Yeah, the general raise size is 3x + 1 per limper. Some start with 4x, and I certainly don't use a formula, but it's a general guideline, and sort of emphasizes that the more limpers there are, the more you want to raise. So yeah, I make this $1.50 $1.75, maybe even $2 here. Postflop is read-based imo. If they're just passive and are folding to a lot of cbets, just cbet, since this flop doesn't hit a lot of hands that call you there. The problem is, hands like 77-TT may call here. This is also ugly with you being out of position here (also when you're in the blinds with limpers I'd raise more as well, so definitely $1.75 - $2 here, just because you'll be oop postflop). The problem is people love to slowplay these flops (since you almost never can outdraw trips here) so if you check and they check behind you can't even be sure they missed it, plus they'll be calling with the pocket pairs. I guess the way you played it here I like a check-fold here, but if you raise more, get it heads up, then you can probably bet flop and if he calls you bet the turn as well. But yeah, raise way more preflop, that'd be a good start.

Not much to add to what these guys have already said. Raise more pf, and cbetting this flop isn't terrible but will definitely be thin. Checking is absolutely fine.

If you had raised a proper amount pf, you'd probably have gotten fewer callers, and you could probably cbet it against up to like two people.

Thanks guys - I might be too embarassed to post the rest of this hand now lol.

But I have to start somewhere and your advice will help get me where I need to be. It's funny - I almost feel like I just started playing this week. I have really never played ring games much except when having fun with other people from here.

So I will keep posting hands and you can keep laying it on me lol.
