I sat down at a new $0.20/$0.40 8-game table because the existing were all full. Another guy sat down and we started. He bought in for $2 while I put down the full $10.

pokerstars Game #25741117157: 8-Game (Triple Draw 2-7 Lowball Limit, $0.20/$0.40) - 2009/03/08 13:55:00 ET

Seat 4: apollo166 ($2 in chips)
Seat 6: Sohmurr ($10 in chips)

apollo166: posts big blind $0.20
*** DEALING hands ***
Dealt to Sohmurr [Ts 7c 5s 4s 2s]
Sohmurr: raises $0.20 to $0.40
apollo166: calls $0.20
*** FIRST DRAW ***
apollo166: discards 3 cards
Sohmurr: discards 1 card [Ts]
Dealt to Sohmurr [7c 5s 4s 2s] J♣
apollo166: checks
Sohmurr: bets $0.20
apollo166: raises $0.20 to $0.40
Sohmurr: calls ???

I raised from the button with a great starting draw and get called. Obviously I don't have a read on the guy since it's the first hand. I'm ~52% to make an 8 over the next 2 draws so depending on how strong he really is that could be enough. He could be raising here with alot given that he drew 3 then check-raised. I'm not considering folding here, not yet anyway, but should I play back with a 3-bet or take the safe route and just call?

I'm leaning towards the just call here. Let's say he is a donk and is going to raise you light...you have position on him for the next rounds, so you can keep the pot as small as you like. Also, instead of trying to exploit him on the first hand, learn what he is betting with, what he think is a good hand, etc. You would be suprised how many people I have taken 50$ from on Pokerstars because they thought they were playing 5 card draw, not 2-7

I would bet out a hand like that, it is true that you catch people who don't know the game and take them for a big pot. Iv'e seen players show flushes or 2 pair. Even if the guy knows the game you have a dominate hand and should bet.

What is 'full' about a $10 buy-in for a .20/.40? That's 25BB. That's decent, but 'full'?

Anyway, I would call. It's the SB round. Why scare him off, especially if you hit 2nd draw. Nail him on the BB's if you do, you have position. You'll also get to see what he draws next.

First off, "full" refers to the maximum buy-in for the $0.20/$0.40 8-game. Since 2-7 Triple Draw and all the HORSE games are limit, 25 big bets were probably deemed "enough" by PokerStars. At the no limit hold'em and pot limit Omaha, the blinds drop to $0.05/$0.10 which gives the standard 100 big blinds (assuming you have a "full" $10 stack).

Anyway, back to the hand...

I decided to call and see what developed since I had position (I accidently left in that I called on the first post but hopefully the question marks discouraged people from making a more biased post based on the results). Because I called the first draw, there was no reason to raise the second, so I called again. When he stood pat on the 3rd draw I wondered how well I would need to catch. It's the first hand dealt, and neither of us have a read on the other. Since it's heads up, it's feasible (albiet not too likely) he could be standing with a 9 or worse, but more likely an 8 or better lo since I don't imagine he'll get out of line on the first hand. But given that I caught an 8 on the end, I decided to look him down after the third draw.

*** FIRST DRAW ***
apollo166: discards 3 cards
Sohmurr: discards 1 card [Ts]
Dealt to Sohmurr [7c 5s 4s 2s] J♣
apollo166: checks
Sohmurr: bets $0.20
apollo166: raises $0.20 to $0.40
Sohmurr: calls $0.20
*** SECOND DRAW ***
apollo166: discards 1 card
Sohmurr: discards 1 card J♣
Dealt to Sohmurr [7c 5s 4s 2s] 4♣
apollo166: bets $0.40
Sohmurr: calls $0.40
*** THIRD DRAW ***
apollo166: stands pat
Sohmurr: discards 1 card 4♠
Dealt to Sohmurr [7c 5s 2s 4c] 8♦
apollo166: bets $0.40
Sohmurr: calls $0.40
*** SHOW DOWN ***
apollo166: shows [3d 2h 5c 4h 7h] (Lo: 7,5,4,3,2)
Sohmurr: mucks hand
apollo166 collected $3.05 from pot
*** SUMMARY ***
Total pot $3.20 | Rake $0.15
Seat 4: apollo166 (big blind) showed [3d 2h 5c 4h 7h] and won ($3.05) with Lo: 7,5,4,3,2
Seat 6: Sohmurr (button) (small blind) mucked [4c 7c 5s 8d 2s]

Obviously I lost the pot, but I think overall I played it right. Does anyone see anything about the way I played the hand in general that could have been improved upon?
