Hi, yesterday I played a €1/€3 live cash game and I need some help trying to figure out what I could've done better.

Hero: CO+1 (40bb)
Villain: BU (300bb)

Hero holds 7:heart: 8:heart:

fold, fold, fold, fold, Hero raises to 3bb , fold, Villain calls 3bb, SB calls 2.5bb, fold

Flop: 3 Players (10bb)

7:spade: 2:diamond: 6:club:

SB checks, Hero bets 6bb, Villain calls, fold

Turn: 2 players (22bb)

4:spade:

Hero checks, Villain checks

River: 2 players (22bb)

J:spade:

Hero checks, Villain bets 20bb, Hero folds

Thoughts? I felt like I should've raised the turn to defend the hand I had, but I was afraid he'd be calling with higher pocket pairs or with a straight. He's a pretty lose player and he's quite unpredictable, I've played with him a few times and it's hard to read his hands. I was somewhat handicapped too, playing with a short stack and all (lost a big pot earlier) so maybe playing suited connectors wasn't a good idea to begin with.

Villain shows A:spade:2:spade:

If you aren't going to top-up then you have to know SS strat and you certainly don't raise with suited connectors from MP.

As played, shove the flop to max what little FE you have (which is almost none).

Fold pre, this hand is garbage with a 40bb stack.

Is the 40bb stack by choice? If not, top up and play with a full stack. Then you can play this hand.

If 40bb is by choice, then fold preflop. Suited connectors go up in value with larger stacks and go down in value with smaller stacks. With your stack, 87s is pretty much worthless.

As played, bet bigger on the flop, so you can shove a blank turn. It's the only hope you have.

As played, you have about the best turn card you could hope for. Your chips need to go in the middle.

Yeah what Tim said. As played.. I smell a slowplay or a back door flush, nice fold

Fold pre is first with this stack. Jam turn is second. Call River is third.

He has enough missed draws and random over cards. I'm not folding top pair with this stack.
