$200 NL HE Full Ring: Brick and Mortar Casino...pocket aces get wiped out

Here is the situation, sorry for no standardized hand info, this was a game at a real casino.

$1/$2 no limit holdem.

10 players seated.

I am in late position, two behind the button.

I am dealt Ah Ad

One raiser in the seat before me to $5

I re-raise to $15.

Five players call $15.

Flop comes down Js 10h 4c

I raise to $50.
I get 4 folds and a re-raise for $50.
I call.

Turn is a 9c

Villian checks, I check.

River is a 6h.

Villian puts me all in.

I call and lose to a set of fours.

Ok....I know I did wrong, but here is my thought process, both what i was thinking when i did it and what i think i should have done.

First...i think my raise was good but perhaps i should have gone $25. $25 was not unusual for this table. $25 might have scared pocket 4's...but i'd think $15 would have done the trick. Do you really call 7X the big blind with 44...i guess this guy does.

BTW...no read. I wasnt at the table long enough.

Here is where i think i ****ed up.

1.) When he re-raised i could have folded.

-i was thinking he re-raised on a straight draw, maybe AK or AQ. I would take my AA against an open ended or definitly gut shot draw.

2.) He checked the turn which was a 9. That card makes a straight. He checked to see what i would do and I like an idiot checked. I should have pushed...i may have gotten a fold by fronting the straight.

I never considered that he had pocket 4's. Though, now, it makes sense...

He limped in infront of me....and re-raised the flop when he hit his set.

I was just thinking who the hell calls the pre-flop raise with 44? I thought, hey, he is slow playing AK or AQ and now he is threatening the straight.

I'm not angry, but, i want to take away a lesson from this...

so, anyone that can think of a better maneuver, let me know.

so, they have pocket 4s. when it comes to them, the pot has already like $60-70 in it, and they need to pay 15. if they hit their set, they will likely be ahead of everyone, and who knows how much they would be able to win from the rest of the people. generally, huge implied odds - if it were heads-up, probably it wouldn't be worth it, but in a multi-way pot, set-mining like that is a must.

i would suggest you read up a little in the strategy and learning poker sections of the forum (the latter is not just for absolute beginners), and soon you will understand why people would make such a decision. :) good luck!

hmm...you are right.

I do "set mine" but i dont think i would call such a large raise...

Do you think maybe the pot was large enough that i should have raised everyone out of the hand?

maybe if i went all in pre-flop i could have caught someone with AK, AQ, KK, or just a bluff caller...and if i force folds then i still make around 40 or so.

3-bet far bigger preflop. I make it ~25. As played fold flop. You're never good when someone raises you in a 6-way pot. If you do call though fold river. The minraise then check then shove is almost always a monster not wanting to scare you away then wanting to get all the money in on the river.

make it much bigger preflop. if 5 guys are gonna call $15, make it like $50, so you only get 1-2 callers. as played, fold flop

unless im the original raiser im dumping pocket 4s to a 3bet. U must have been at a mad loose table for 5 players to be seeing a flop in a 3bet preflop pot!!!!

I was really surprised that 5 guys called a 3 bet pre-flop...

I never considered the pocket 4's....i also just didnt think straight draw because who in the hell calls with the hand you need for the straight draw.

I was thinking pocket kings...ace king...something like that or he thinks i am trying to steal the pot and i have nothing and he's going to bluff me out of it.

My conclusions now are this in the order of best to worst plays:

1.) 3 bet raise was too low for the table. I should have made it at least a 5 bet if not 7-10. I really needed to make these people pay to see the cards. A guy with 44 would have to be just about out of his mind to call a 50 dollar pre-flop bet at a $1/$2 table. The only people who might call are hands AA dominates (KK AK etc).

2.) I should have folded the re-raise on the flop. I was not pot comitted at that point and could have bowed out gracefully. The re-raise on the flop usually means someone hit something...way more than top pair...I was Ace blind and would have followed my hand into the gates of hell. This was a very bad call.

3.) When the 9 came on the turn and he checked...he may have been scared of the straight draw. If i was going to push....should have been right here. Instead my lack of a bet says "hey, no straight". If i went all in as soon as i saw the card, in an excited way, he might think straight or pocket nines that made a set. This isnt the best option but its better than what i did and my only possible salvation after a disastrous call.

This was my first BM casino experience...i've only played online.

I have learned to lay down pocket aces on line, but, when the physical cards are in your hand it is even harder...especially when you are looking at winning a $400-$500 pot and you have the best starting hand in holdem.

It was an expensive lesson but....thats what poker is for me, a series of expensive lessons---the cheap ones just dont stick. I can read books and i can get beat on 10 dollar pots, but, the things i remember are the ones that hurt.
