This happened tonight at my local casino. $1/$2 NLHE.

Stack sizes:

Villain 1 : $450
Villain 2: 75
Hero: $300

- Villain raises from MP1 to $22 (Hand has been limped in, and $15 has been average raise size on this table. This is villains 4th Buy in tonight but he's gotten it in as a favourite in previous hands just got unlucky. Typical TAG)

- Villain 2 Calls from MP2

- Hero has AdQd in HJ and 3bets to $75

- Folds around to Villain 1 who 4bets all in

- Villain 2 goes all in.

- Pot size is roughly $385 with $75 of it being our own committed chips.

- Hero tanks for a while and decides ultimately to call.

- Board showed 710KA2

Villains hand:
Villain has KK

So, few things to consider. This was the last hand of a 10 hour session and 3 buy ins. (i've managed to run all 3 buy ins up to about $500 but ultimately lost them to what I think are leaks that need fixing).

This is my THIRD 3 bet i've made all night, Villain 1 has been sitting for about 4 hours at the table and seen me 3bet only once before.

In my eyes the tight image I had means my 3 bet could ideally get villain to fold most of his PFR range.

Part of me thinks however just calling instead of 3 betting then shutting down when villain would ultimately c/bet on the flop with top set would be the better move? I'm not sure. I feel like If I didn't commit $75 to a 3bet then I wouldn't feel obliged to call off the other $225?

Any advice? I'm leaning towards just call and employ pot control on that flop because when he shoves into me preflop it puts me in a tough spot purely because of my 3 bet.
I feel my analysis is pretty spot on but any advice would be much appreciated.

Just call pre against a solid TAG.

Save 3 betting in this spot vs someone who is opening a ton. Not a reg that opened 10x pre

I think we've got to be cautious since we have many indicators that he's super strong here. First, he opens to 11x (far over the average raise size like you said). Second, he's opening from MP (okay it's not UTG, but still relatively EP). Third, he's a solid TAG. Mix all these together and our AQs isn't doing great.

However, we are likely going to have the button and we have a limper in front of us. Maybe he has 1010-JJ or even KK and we can win on A-high boards. Maybe we can catch a flush or a straight. The odds to call there are fine.

We have to have a plan when we 3bet:
1. Why are we 3-betting?
2. What will we do to a 4-bet?

My answers:
1. Given his range as described above, I really don't think we can 3bet for value. He just seems too strong here. With only one limper, 3betting as a semi-bluff (to win a large pot pre-flop, possibly), just doesn't make too much sense either. Calling seems just fine here.

2. TAGs don't 4-bet often and when they do it's STRONG. Like really strong. If this guy hasn't gotten out of line, we're really looking at QQ+, AK. I'd be shocked if I clicked reveal and it says he had TT. It's gross to 3bet fold, but I'm really not happy to see a 4bet. Considering how I'd feel to a 4bet, this makes me lean even stronger towards a call PF.

It's all about looking for clues about his range and putting them together to make your decision.
