I have $350 and raise to $15 from CO at 8-handed table with 88. Older guy who is a terrible passive nit reraises on BTN to $35. He probably perceives me as tightish but good. Almost never see this guy raise let alone reraise pre, I have him covered barely (He has $330). He's passive pre and doesn't bluff postflop but can make seem terrible calldowns. Once saw call a C-R with KQ on Qxx board and then call shove on A turn, he lost to AQ. Another time I felted him with KTdd in 3-way pot when he had 2 red aces on Jd Js 4d 8d board when I pushed over 2 raises on the turn.

I call.

flop is :8d4: :qs4: :7h4:
(pot $73)

I check, he checks

Turn: :qh4:

I bet $75, he calls

River: :as4:
(pot $223, effective remaining stacks $220)

Hero shoves for $220

IMO you played it correctly on all streets, although I doubt he would call the relative overbet unless he had a Queen, maybe AK, or better. A bet on the flop wouldn't have been a terrible play if you put him on AA, or, KK, which it seems like you did considering you said you've never seen him re-raise pre-flop.

If you did lose the hand to QQ, AA, AQ it's a cooler and it doesn't happen often enough to change your play in that situation.

Things that went through my head during hand:

1. You do find these spots live where people's ranges are ridiculously narrow.
2. The check on the flop made no sense to me, slightly worrisome but the second Q made me feel a lot better.
3. A is a gross card in so many ways given his absurd range.

This spot is so weird with this runout. So he goes from 1 combo that beats me to 4. Question is, does he call off with 6 combos of KK?

This is AK a ton and JJ the rest of the time imo. vs a calling station, majority of his range being TPTK, looks fine to me.

Chuck, I really do not think AK/JJ are in his preflop range. I've seen him show up with those hands in limped pots.

Sick spot. I've played against the same type of player. Only raise AA,KK and MAYBE QQ if their feeling feisty, however some of the oldies raise AKs so do you think he's capable of raising with AKs b/c his line follows that hand too.

CO/BTN, I really don't see how we can narrow a live player's range to QQ+ (though I don't play live often, and understand 200nl players can be really really predictable), but if that's the case; 6 combos of KK vs 1 of QQ + 3 of AA. That means he has to call with KK like %80 or more of the time for us to show a profit by vbetting and/or he has to have QQ/AA discounted somewhat. Not sure we can do that for our cause, ie I think if we discount AA we have to do the same for KK (if he's not vbetting/is trapping AA on that flop he's likely not vbetting KK), and he has to call more often with KK.

I still shove for the idiot factor - people show up with too many random hands at times, even for a 3bet, and I don't completely discount AK from his range.

It might be worth noting significant table talk. I'm an extremely chatty player when HU in a hand.

As you might guess, I was fairly stunned when he 3-bet pre. A quick glance at stacks told me he had enough for me to set mine; tbh it'd be hard for me to fold any playable hand against this guy when he has something.

I sighed and said, "Nice hand," and pounded the table to indicate that he had me beat.

When the flop came I pretended I didn't even see it and gave a quick point to him, "Check." He thinks, shrugs and pats the table.

When the turn came I made a funny face at him and said, "You don't have anything?" and bet and he called.

I'll tell you about the river conversation tomorrow.

So on the river the A was really gross but I just sighed and shoved.

He didn't instacall so I knew I had the best hand.

He gave the same sort of "eh," shrug he had in the hand I mentioned in OP where he had KQ on QxxA board and called.

"I don't have an Ace. Pocket Aces are definitely good."

He called with KK.

Gotta wonder what he's putting you on especially the turn bet and then the river push and he still calls.

In the context of how I usually play, it's not much of a speech...as I said, I'm pretty chatty.

I'm surprised no one suggested making a smaller river bet since 99% of sane people aren't calling with KK here. I actually shoved the river thinking I got super coolered or that he'd fold all worse.
