I think that preflop I maybe call raises too much, so here is an example of a hand where I wasn't sure what to do preflop.

The first two villains that limp in are both donks and the villain that raised is a decent reg, quite TAG and he folds to 3bets a high percentage of the time. I don't have any notes on how much the donks fold to 3-bets but usually donks don't fold much pre.

UTG ($20)
UTG+1 ($20)
MP1 ($20)
MP2 ($89.91)
MP3 ($6.16)
CO ($21)(
BTN ($20)
SB - Hero ($21.18)
BB ($20)

Hero is dealt 88

Preflop ($0.30)
3 folds, MP2 calls $0.20, MP2 calls $0.20, CO raises to $1.20, 1 fold, hero?

The raiser in the CO is a good target to 3bet especially as he is very likely isolating the limpers and he's in late position. The only thing is it is quite likely the first donk will not fold to the 3bet since they usually don't and he has a large stack, but maybe the fact that he limped in raither than raising means he won't call the 3-bet. Not worried about donk 2 since he has a tiny stack. So what is the best option here?

a) 3 bet
b) call
c) fold

Please give your reasoning behind your answer

Call, you have positon, cant stand any action from the reg isolator are getting a fine price to set mine against the fish when he calls etc etc. 3betting probably scares the fish away most of the time unless you know hes the type to call any 3bets after limping, but most fold. When fish calls you also have reg calling because he's getting a good price anyways so 3betting doesn't do much for me. I dont think im ever really 3betting a hand like 88, it does well against a moderate range and 3betting regs with it just turns it into a bluff as they will fold everything you beat 22-77 and continue with stuff that is in better shape TT+, AQ,AK, etc.

you can't call. playing oop unimproved is gonna suck and villain's ranges are too weak to set mine.

folding is fine.

3betting is higher variance.

ugh sorry must of read that wrong, i still don't like 3 betting. Calling isn't as great but it's still close because we are getting like 20:1 so depends how terrible the fish are for me, nothing wrong with folding though.

ok thanks, what would you do in the same situation here with AJ/KQ type hands

Much better. you have blockers, you can be pretty confident about folding if they come over the top. The only issue is what happens if your opponent is good enough to realize those hand are in your range and flats your 3bet with AK/AQ.

Another issue is you're bloating the pot oop, a lot of fish don't fold to c-bets and the pot is likely to go multiway even if he does call the 3bet, so another issue is 3betting can sometimes squeeze the fish out of the pot which is dumb a lot of the time, depending on fish though. :/
