$20 NL HE 6-max: Hit set oop, no action on flop

This is a spot that's been killing me lately. A few years ago, I'd lead into the preflop raiser here, hoping to illicit a raise, and if they folded I just assumed I wasn't winning a big pot anyway. However, I've been hearing lots of people I believe say that check/raising is more +EV than donking here, so that's what I've started doing.

My problem is how to proceed when something like this happens. On the turn I feel completely lost. This is my very first hand at the table, so I have no reads whatsoever, all unknowns.

pokerstars No-Limit Hold'em, $0.25 BB (6 handed) - Poker-Stars Converter Tool from FlopTurnRiver.com

CO ($29.50)
Button ($41.90)
SB ($25.35)
Hero (BB) ($25)
UTG ($44.55)
MP ($16.35)

Preflop: Hero is BB with 8

2 folds, CO calls $0.25, Button bets $0.75, 1 fold, Hero calls $0.50, CO calls $0.50

Flop: ($2.35) 8

The argument of check-raising vs leading out depends on a lot of factors (your opponent's range, how aggressive he is, how much he goes to showdown, how often he bluff raises, how often he cbets, what your image is like, if your opponents are even noticing your image, etc).

Either is fine and it doesn't make a huge difference without some good reads. As played we just bet ($1.50-pot). If they fold, there's just nothing we can do.

Not sure why you feel lost; you have a set and you want to build the pot, so bet.

I felt lost in what the best way to build the pot at that point was. I was trying to decide how likely it was that the preflop raiser would delay-cbet if checked to again + likelyhood of the player in the middle betting, possibly getting called by the preflop raiser, both cases allowing me to put in a raise on them, versus just leading out.

After missing the flop bet, the only way I felt I could win a significant pot was check/raising the turn, then firing the river, unless my turn lead gets raised. Probably just thinking way too hard for 25nl, or just overthinking in general for that matter.

It was too bad, but I couldn't have any info on AF, WTSD, etc as it was my first hand, so I was basically playing it in a vacuum.

I'd bet about 1.75 here and hope to get a call. I guess lost in the best sense is OK...

When holding a set this is a very dangerous board, you have to be carefull, but not scared. You have a powerfull hand dont overplay it, but extract what you can here while your infront. Checking hoping to c-bet is acceptable, but on a board like this its risky. Id bet $1.70

I'm only playing 5nl 6max at the minute so this might be totally wrong for 25nl but, on the flop i'd be leading out for like $2 here i think, its a really drawy board and you'll still get called by a lot of flush and straight draws, a lot of the time i would check-raise the button, but this boards got so many draws on it that i'd feel like i had to bet out.

since the board is very drawy and i dont believe slow playing at those limits. i think it a raise on the flop and on the turn

just dont slowplay ur big hands..it doesnt work..someone has a 9 , someone has a JACK, someone has a 6 , and someone has 2 diamonds, atleast one of them will beat you on the river lol , so DONT SLOWPLAY , make them pay if u want to chase! but one thing sure ur not winning big here with this play..but u might lose big for sure

get some money in the pot. you have a set which is exactly what you were looking for. no more free cards to let someone catch up with you or draw out on you.
