Had this hand this morning. I dont think this is an easy call but I think because there's a player already AI it looks like hes just trying to isolate him by getting me to fold the flop. The issue is the player just joined the table and payed the BB to play. I know paying the BB is relatively a fishy move so I kind of suspected that the player was not that strong. Also I checked how many tables he was playing and it was 1. Easy call or fold? Is this a good way to breakdown a unknown player?

Depends on if you mind playing high variance poker. With the given action it's impossible to narrow the villain's hand range down significantly.

Personally I'd probably call, as I have seen plenty of unknowns do this as light as J9 (or even worse). The problem of course is that the could have a really strong hand as well. You have to make a judgment call about the variance imo: embrace it and take the high variance road by calling or just fold while you don't have much invested in the pot.

Scourrge, I was watching this training video the other day and the guy commenting was talking about the stack-to-pot ratio. Is this something that should be considered? If so, do we have the correct ratio to call then or will we still see super high variance?

Ive seen players like ship flops with boards that would make TPTK and they would showdown with an overpair like KK+. But like on a 9 high board I cant see anyone reasonably doing that...ya know?

I'm not sure how long you've been around $2nl, but assuming it plays similarly to $4nl on merge (the lowest limit), people will do crazy shit and you can't discount the spazz factor.

Villain is all in on the flop, correct? Stack-to-pot ratio (SPR) isn't really that relevant here. If you'd like, PM me and I can point you to some resources that may help you with SPR and when it's relevant (can't be arsed to look up specific pages right this second).

I think you are mixing up pot odds with SPR. The pot odds determine whether we are getting the proper odds to call against an all-in raise. The pot was 70c before the shove and the villain shoves $1.30. So we must call $1.30 for a chance to win $2. Our pot odds are therefore 2:1.3 or about 1.5:1, which means to break even we must win more often than 1/(1+1.5) = 40%.

The SPR has more to do with post flop play and how we want to play certain types of hands. Small SPR usually means we should be willing to get all in with weaker holdings, while bigger SPR means that we must play more carefully and should be more inclined to fold to big bets as they usually indicate more strength than big bets into small SPR pots.

Again, PM me if you want more on SPR. It seems like you might be watching training videos that are a bit above the level you are playing at, which is fine, but I'd suggest you try to pace yourself and pick up each concept fully before jumping onto the next one.

Also a quick note: The expected value of a play (the amount we expect to win on average in the long run) and the variance of the play are not the same thing.
