Not been here long but as stats suggest Villain is very laggy. Don't like to fold a decent hand to such a lag player, but can't see what I'm beating. I probably prefer the check call line as I'm folding out all bluffs but probably getting raised by flushes and better Aces. If I check call, if he does have a bluff I can let him hand himself. Enough of me going on, here's the hand:

pokerstars No-Limit Hold'em, $0.02 BB (7 handed) - PokerStars Hand Converter from HandHistoryConverter.com

MP1 ($4.05)
MP2 ($7.28)
CO ($2)
Button ($5)
SB ($2.17)
Hero (BB) ($2.02)
UTG ($2.25)

Preflop: Hero is BB with 9

2 folds, MP2 bets $0.04, 3 folds, Hero calls $0.02

Flop: ($0.09) 2

(2 players)
Hero checks, MP2 checks

Turn: ($0.09) K

Hero bets $0.06, MP2 calls $0.06

River: ($0.21) A

Hero bets $0.12, MP2 raises to $0.24

Preflop 3-bet or fold, vs this guy fold.

River - you have to call, getting great odds. I'd bet larger tho

Why you 3-balling eh? Flop check is standard.

If villain is laggy, I'm never folding trips on the river. Villain is going to have a king or a worse ace a fair bit of the time, and you're getting like a kajillion to one.

I'm not 3-balling, I said vs this guy fold. Just putting up the options for A9s, I don't think it's a call OOP by any means. You call with it in the blinds ?

57 in pot and 12 to call; you only have to have the best hand 1 in 5 to be +EV. So what did you do and what did he have?

What is your thinking on checking the flop?

I figure I'm folding out anything that's missed which since he's opening so many pots is a lot. I should say that I'm pretty new to cash and happy to admit that, frankly, I suck at it. I had a few bucks left on PS so thought I'd give cash a go, and have so far turned about $8 into $19 in the last two days by 4 tabling 2NL.

In this spot, I couldn't see what I was beating here. Would he check back the flop if he hit his Ace after raising pre? The only thing he would, possibly, is 2 pair. But then when I bet out the turn, he would surely raise 2 pair here if he was getting trappy and the turn brings the flush draw. If I'm wrong and he had 2 pair, then the A brought his boat so I'm beat, but the flat call on the turn and the subsequent RR on the river suggests a flush. I folded, because, apparently, I'm an idiot. I just can't see why someone would min bet raise here, unless they had it. It doesn't look like a bluff because he's giving me such good odds so he must want me to call.

Trying to rationalize how a laggy player plays will only get you in trouble. Your thought process against crazy players should be this:

"Trips are hard to make. I'm going to showdown."

JohnBoyWWFC,

I want to thank you for your detailed description of your thought process. It's exactly the kind of answer I was hoping to get to my question.

Understanding "WHY" is so very important. And seeing it in the context of a specific hand (as opposed to a general concept) is invaluable.

No problem! And thanks to those that helped here- also invaluable for a newbie trying to beat cash games.
