What went wrong in my play here conceptually? Should I check the turn in these kind of situations?

Oh btw the 1.16 instead of 1.18 was a misclick :D

What went wrong in your play? Nothing.

I raise a tad bigger preflop, because we're out of position and there's 3 players in, so 0.30-0.36 is better, imo.
Flop bet size is good.
Don't do the exact bet thing on the turn. Just bet 1.50$, same result.

So he had a flush. Bummer. You were beating everything but a flush, and even then you had 10 outs. You're crushing lots of lower sets, two pairs, etc. that could still call.

Fine. Going broke with a set in a 3-bet pot with a low SPR is unavoidable.

Can't fear the flush that much and pretty happy to get it in with top set
