How tight is the opener? Otherwise, I'd consider a squeeze preflop.

If not, I just c/c the river. We're now chopping in most cases, and I don't want to face a raise if I bet.

No real reason the bet the river and inflate the pot if he isn't a loose player with a wide range as you only get much value from a few hands. Check call it as you do have showdown value

He showed QJ. So he was chasing the straight and obviously missed so he tried to bluff me off.

Preflop is a fold. You have AJo and you're OOP on a full-ring table facing an UTG+1 open. The PFR will typically have a range of AQo+, AJs+, 77+, T9s+, which has you crushed.

If you're not going to fold, then squeezing to something like 25 cents is the next best option. You chose the worst of the 3 options (fold > raise > call).

On the flop, you should be check-calling, since you don't have the betting initiative and there's no reason to think that this flop will get checked around.

On the turn, I guess you now have to barrel, since you stole the betting initiative on the flop.

On the river, you should be check-calling, since you have showdown value and want to employ pot control.
