Analysis

Preflop: reraise BB. Reason: the limping appeared weak to me, normally a lower pair of lower suited connectors. So I tried to take the pot down with a raise.
River: check. Reason: four clubs on the table, could easily lose to a higher flush.
River: call. Reason: By checking I gave away I either didn't had a flush, or I had a lower flush. I figured if the player would value bet here, he would have bet less. I putted him either on an ace or a bluff, both of which I beat.

Any comments? Was this a good 'read', or just lucky?

Good read, this calling could mean straight draw on flop as it was :p

You were lucky in the sense that you ran into someone that didn't play too well. Villain should have closed up shop earlier and saved some chips....

I like your reasoning on the river call. Unless you have history with the villain and he knows you're prone to look for bluffs and call all-ins the bet surely seems sized to induce a fold rather than get value from you.

Good to know I'm on the right track then. I started playing very ABC, folding when not hitting anything and only making this kind of calls with the absolute nuts. Now I'm trying to see where I can get profit in other situations, like this one.

Gaai1 I think you've been given a wrong advice. You got lucky, your opponent played very wrong. In this spot if you call these types of bet you will be easily exploitable in a sense that you will try to make hero calls too often.

I'm aware of that, thanks. I fold such bets 9 out of 10, or maybe even more.
In this case it was the combination of the limp in stead of the bet which suggested lower hand cards and the oversized bet.

I think both is the answer to this.

You did have a good read but you were also lucky that your opponent played it badly. Be prepared to be able to let pots like this go from time to time.

Will do! I read another article stressing the importance of ABC poker at the micro stakes. So I will limit these kind of actions to a minimum.

Regarding this hand however, it was the first time I thought the whole hand through at the decision making point on the river. It's so easy to follow along in these videos where professional poker players explain their decision making process in a hand. But to do it yourself, in the middle of the action, is not that easy. At least not for a beginning player like me. Nice to see the pieces of the puzzle falling in place and to see a decision pay off.

There is a lot of information on µNL. Especially on Cardschat, just search the different threads and youtube is invaluable as well. I only really watch the pros when I'm 'relaxing' from poker :)
