What's your reasoning for the size of the flop bet?

Bet bigger on the flop.

THe K and Q mean that he has to have something to play for stacks.

So bet bigger and play for stacks. If he has 45s then it dosent matter if you bet or not, he is never going to play for stacks. whereas if he has KJ you loose value.

Stop betting small trying to range balence. He either calls or he dosent, your raise size dosent really effect anything.

I was trying not to chase weak hands out and hoping decent hands would re-raise.I bet a little small thinking if villain had AK AQ KQ 77 hands might re-raise and that I was still making it unprofitable for JT to call. (8 outs to a straight on turn, (16% or 5 to 1) betting .08 makes him risk .08 for .25 or about 3 to 1. If turn was a blank I would have made a bigger bet.

List the weak hands you think he calls a smaller bet but folds to a larger bet.

Maybe the following?

QT
JT
Ks9s
Kc9c
Tc9c
Ts9s

If they call the smaller bet they call the bigger bet

So now list some hands that really only call the smaller bet

maybe only the T9 suited connectors

Maybe

So what do you gain by betting smaller?

You get a bet from one or two hands that might fold, but loose value from a much larger range that would call a larger bet.

If he has 66 he folds to any bet so betting smaller dosent keep in enough of his range to justify the loss against the range that hit

So, the goal when you have a big hand is:

figure out what the 2nd best hand(s) might be and bet enough that your opponent will call a large bet or need to re-raise so you can get them all in because if your opponent has a small hand you don't lose much when they fold?

Just remember the axiom big hand big pot small hand small pot. When you hit a big flop, like your set you want to figure out how to get as much money as possible in the pot. Like stu said, if villain has 66 you aren't getting paid no matter what so might as well go for a bigger pot right off either by making it at least .12 (that .04 is over 20% of pot) or checking on flop that is really dry, hoping btn either takes the lead or improves on turn.
